TLDR : Answer Summary
After canceling your work permit at a school, you cannot apply for a new visa while remaining in Thailand. You can apply for a new 1-year extension for any eligible reasons, but not while under cancellation. If you cancel your current extension of stay based on employment, you may have to leave the country or seek a 60-day COVID extension or a short exit stamp. Alternatively, you could do a visa run to apply for a SETV single-entry tourist visa, allowing you 90 days in Thailand.

the short answer is no, you can't apply for a new VISA after you cancel your work permit and then go cancel your extension of stay based on employment at the immigration office. 🙁

IF you can't cancel one extension from the current employer and immediately apply for the new extension with the documents from the new employer you're done 😮

After you cancel the current extension if you can't get a 60 day covid extension you could get a 7 day "get out of dodge" stamp for 1900baht and that gives you a week to leave the country. <- as has been pointed out you can't apply for ANYTHING from that 7 days to leave stamp. It means you leave in a week.

You'd have to exit/re-enter the country on a visa exempt entry (which you could extend for 30 days if you needed) to buy you the time between the jobs. AND then you could apply for the Non-B visa inside the country with the new employer

so worst case I take the 7 day extension, leave and then re-enter on a visa exempt entry that lasts 30 days and then extend it for an additional 30 days if needed. Is that correct?

thank you...well said.

As James explained above,

Your choice after canceling your extension of stay based on teaching/working is applying for another 1-year extension for whatever reason you can meet the requirements (except Covid extension if available). You cannot apply for a new visa in-country.

@Seaton ************
, There is no 7-days extension. It's s the "application denied" stamp and gives you 7 days to leave when you apply for whatever extension for whatever reason and got denied. It's NOT an extension because once you get that 7 days to leave the kingdom stamp, you cannot apply for any following extension.

But the basic story is as James explained above anyway.

, Please delete the picture. That information is not really right. There is no 7-days extension. It's s the "application denied" stamp and gives you 7 days to leave when you apply for whatever extension for whatever reason and got denied. It's NOT an extension because once you get that 7 days to leave the kingdom stamp, you cannot apply for any following extension.

you must leave Thailand with that 7 day extension... it's a DENIED extension of stay.

so I can't re-enter thailand after and apply for a tourist visa?
James ********
@Seaton ************
you cannot get a tourist visa inside Thailand...

ONLY available in a Thai Embassy or Consulate outside of Thailand.

so I can use the 7 day extension to then leave the country and visit an embassy in Myanmar, Laos or Malaysia?

If you are not able to get the COVID extension then you can do a land border visa run to Vientiane Laos and apply for a SETV single entry tourist visa.

That will give you 60+30=90 days stay in Thailand... Giving you time to consider your options.
James ********
Ask your Thai immigration office IF you can apply for the 60 days COVID extension... IF they say Yes...

Here's the common found requirements for the COVID extension...ask your Thai immigration office for their requirements.

I have placed the TOPIC

Stop working what to do

On your post.

CLICK on it and all posts about stopping work will Pop up to read.
James ********
Your employer will give you a letter to give to your Thai immigration office to cancel your current Non B based extension of stay.

On the specified ending date of your employment...go to the Thai immigration office

And you will need to notify the Thai Labor Ministry to cancel your Thai work permit.

What is your plan after your current job ends ?

What is your passport nation?

Are your married to a Thai or Father of a Thai child ?

Are you seeking a new job in Thailand ?
James ********
@Seaton ************
sorry but you have ample replies to your situation. I am closing comments and wishing you all the best.

...Cancel your work permit with the Thai labor ministry, ...

.. GO cancel your extension with the immigration office that Issued the current extension stamp,

...try to get the COVID extension...

...if DENIED you will get the 7 day get out THAILAND stamp,

...<- LEAVE and come back visa exempt on entry...
James ********
@Seaton ************
you cannot teach without the legal Thai work permit to teach at the international School and the Non B visa AND or extension approved by Thai immigration.
James ********
@Seaton ************
The teaching contract supports your need for your Non B visa.

The challenge is how do you get your current Non B based extension of stay... cancelled and new one in place in a matter of days.

A seemingly difficult task to do this coming week.

Yet you are to start teaching Thursday August 4th in another province. AND to do so is illegal unless you can get the Schools and Thai immigration offices working together for you.

I am planning to start a new teaching job in Suratthani. My passport is American. Not married, no kids. I am seeking a new job at a school in Suratthani to begin work on August 3rd.

BUT do you NOW have a Teaching contract in Surat Thani to start teaching August 4th ?

@Seaton ************
and they're preparing for you the needed documents to obtain the Non B visa?.... OR as you are now an extension of stay as a teacher...with the cooperation of your new employer and Thai immigration office in Surat Thani and your current Thai immigration office... explore getting the reason for the extension of stay to be your teaching in Surat Thani.

Let's await the morning in Thailand as it's late night now...

I have asked our Moderating team to review your post and reply with their suggestions about your options.

Monday is already August 1st.. AND you have an employer to start teaching Thursday August 4th...

I am NOT certain that you have the time needed to do this. It's a huge challenge.
