If one resigns with some months remaining on a work visa, can one stay without problems (and assuming the work permit is cancelled by the employer) ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When resigning from a job and holding a work visa, your ability to remain in Thailand depends on whether your visa is an entry visa or an extension based on your work. If it's an extension linked to your employment, you must leave the country upon resigning as you cannot stay after canceling your work permit. However, if you hold a visa that allows entry, you can stay until the end date of your current permitted stay, as long as you are within the first 90 days after entering Thailand.

If it's a visa yes, but not if it's an extension of stay (see above).

if you have extension based on working, you cannot stay after stopping work and canceling WP.

If you are on entry from Visa itself, during first 90days, you can stay until current permitted to stay until date. You need to check which entry/stay you are on now.

If you are on the Extension of Stay, a stamp from Immigration Office and you don't cancelled it on the last day of working, you could be fined 500 Thb with a maximum of 20.000 Thb for overstay.

Thanks... the legality and how authorities deal with issues remains cloudy... (and subject to fines).

no, you have to void the extension of stay immediate.
