Hi everyone,

Considering a job change from teaching to a company in Thailand. Is it possible to cancel the current visa/work permit and apply for a new one without leaving the country? Any insights or experiences would be appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
It's possible to cancel your current visa and work permit and apply for a new one without leaving Thailand under certain conditions. If you are on an initial 90-day non-B visa, you will not be able to do this. However, if you're on an extension, you can proceed with the cancellation process, which requires cooperation from both your current and future employers as well as the immigration office. You will need documentation from your current employer indicating your last day of work to cancel your work permit, and then you can apply for a new extension with documents from your new employer.

There are many ways that you should be able to do this. I'll just give you some advice.

If you're on an initial 90 day non-B visa then it's not possible.

If you're an extension of stay then it might be possible. You'll need cooperation from your current company, your future company, and any relevant immigration offices.

You would need to take documents from your current employer stating your last day of work to cancel your work permit, then take those documents and your cancelled work permit to immigration to cancel your extension. Then you would apply for a new extension with documents from your new employer.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate your guidance on the process. I've heard there might be a 7-day extension to sort out personal matters after the cancellation. Is this accurate? Also, could you please clarify how much time is typically given to leave the country after the visa cancellation?

there is no 7 day extension, that is an extension denied stamp which gives you 7 days to leave the country which you must do. To cancel an extension you should get a letter from your employer stating the date you will stop work and you can then cancel in advance at immigration. You have to leave on the day that you cancel the visa (or the date you provide if you cancel in advance)
