What should I consider about visa overstays in Thailand and how can I avoid mistakes when calculating my stay?

Just a word of caution when assuming that your original visa stamp is clear. I didn’t calculate my 180 days and just took the date stamped in my passport as the last date but instead of the date stamp being 9th (which it looks like) it was actually the 7th so I overstayed my visa by two days. 1k baht fine.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shared their experience of overstaying their Thai visa due to a misunderstanding of their visa stamp's date, resulting in a 1,000 baht fine. The discussion highlighted the importance of accurately calculating the 180-day stay limit and checking visa stamps carefully, as misinterpretations can lead to fines and being placed on immigration watch lists. Other commenters offered advice, suggesting to leave Thailand days before the visa expires and to maintain clear records of visa dates, noting common confusion arising from handwritten dates. The conversation also touched on questions regarding entry requirements, such as proof of funds.

Leave a few days/week before, I mean you get another 180 days when you return, now you will be on the immigration “watch list” don’t make the same mistake twice🤷🏿‍♀️

Well it’s a minor offence, which shouldn’t count against you, just ensure you never over stay again, even for 1 day, you just don’t want immigration to have any excuse to question you, might not happen. Important to maintain 500K THB when you come back again in 180 days so they can’t question you about proof of funds. Always be prepared in Thailand GL

The infamous Thai 7.

On the spin side, who is going to leave the country at the last possible hour and not double check the entry exit date calculation?

Myself, I have everything entered into my calendar with a weeks notification or even sooner.

Oh god

Handwriting issue 😞

I just double checked my passport, from all the stamps, only 2 have the until date stamped, and in all the others is handwritten 😱 Didn't realized they used both.

My mom's is 100 no handwriting, even for the "E-visa" text 🤷🏻

Yh.. I shouldn’t have relied solely on a date stamp & according to many on here, I should’ve worked out the 180 days in a calendar year.. stupid me😉

@Justin ************
but that's a very slim chance, I am sure even I would have done the same thing as you did.

I guess the immigration must consider manual mistakes on their part and not charge you for the overstay

Did they ask about 500k in bank account while crossing border?
Travis ********
Anonymous participant 526 that's for visa application, or visa extension. not entering country
John *********
@Travis *******
No Immigration may ask for proof of funds again, it’s best to keep 500k in one account to show if asked. Remember immigration are all powerful, they decide who and who doesn’t enter the Country.

Oh I understand now. So it is actually a "9" but immigration made a mistake when it should have been the 7th may.
