Travelling over to Thai in June I’m a bit worried to take my medication with me even with a Drs letter which I have I did a search and it’s saying I need to apply for a permit as well. Then when I logged onto the site it’s in Thai can’t read it. Anyone else have issues taking pain meds into the country ? last thing I want is to end up in trouble.
Answer summary
When traveling to Thailand with pain medications, it's crucial to ensure you have the necessary documentation and follow regulations. While many travelers report no issues if medications are in original packaging with a prescription label, restricted medications (like those containing codeine or certain narcotics) require a permit from the Thai FDA. It is recommended to carry a doctor's letter detailing your medication. Checking the official Thai government resources for the specific medications you plan to bring is advisable to avoid legal issues at customs.

Can’t help you without knowing what the drug is

But you can simply ask google if your prescriptions are legal and available You have to actually disclose the name of the drug.

P.S. Some pain killers are considered narcotics in many countries

It won’t matter if you have a Dr.‘s note.

Foreign doctors have no authority here, this is a sovereign country.

I carry a injectable, pre loaded drug, needs refrigeration. Not pain meds though. Usually go from US, stop in Korea, then to Vietnam, visit family, then on to Thailand. Only place have I been asked about them is in Inchon, Korea, when going through security. They never checked, just asked what it was. I even got a Dr letter (just in case) this trip. lol

Medications containing Category 2 narcotics (e.g., Codeine, Morphine, Fentanyl) or Psychotropic Substances (Categories 2, 3, 4—e.g., Diazepam, Zolpidem) require prior permit application from the FDA.

If in doubt about the medicine you’re brining, check here. It’s very good! Says if you can have 30 days without an import permit or if you need one. If you do … not hard. Then you’re above board and legal.

It’s always been in English for me. You do need an import certificate for codeine based medicine. It’s not hard.

If it's a restricted medication you need the permit. It should be in English. Most Thai govt pages have language option.

Robert Moldashel Yes, according to Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, medication brought into Thailand for personal use must be kept in its original packaging with the prescription label clearly indicating the name of the traveler

This is the official informationfrom london/Thai embassy. Check which drugs you're bringing & if a permit is required.

My sister travels with morphine so always gets a permit, it's not hard so why risk it

Sharon Brown agree. I’ve travelled with codeine based medicine in the past and applied for a permit. It’s not difficult.

I'm a registered nurse, ward based. It occurred to me one day that when I open up the patience drug cabinet to administer morning meds or afternoon meds. There are that many pills in the cupboard that they often fall out. Like the moderator said just leave everything in the original box and nothing will go wrong.

There would not be a single plane leaving on time. There would not be a single ship sailing on time if all those drugs had to be checked. It is an impossible task.

Last year when I was departing from Bangkok I was pulled over as I was boarding the plane. I was escorted out onto the tarmac where there were two security guards a couple of flight stewardesses plus the two stewardesses that were with me. My backpack was on the tarmac. They turned to me and said I have three cigarette lighters I am only allowed two. So just to test my own theory, I pulled out a couple of boxes of Valium a box of Ritalin a box of alprazolam (Xanax) and put it at the feet of the security guards while I rummaged through my bag to find that extra cigarette lighter. No one cared about the medication even though I literally put it at their feet. They didn't have a script and technically by law completely illegal.

Mark Haycock those medications don’t require an import permit. Codeine does. The lighter situation is very different to customs checking (yes it’s rare to be checked).

Narelle Collins sorry I made a mistake before. It was alprazolam that I brought in not lorazepam.

Ritalin (methylphenidate) is classified as a Category 2 Psychotropic Substance in Thailand. Because of this, it is strictly controlled, and you must follow specific procedures if you intend to bring it into the country for personal use.

Mark Haycock you get the permission so that IF you are checked you are not arrested or worst still, deported. No, they they may not check EVERY passenger but who in god's name wants to chance it? Ridiculous excuse to use for not getting a simple permit. 🤦

Robert Moldashel like I said in my post. There would not be a single plane flying on time ever. If all the drugs had to be checked, verified and permission slips read. Literally no one cares so long as it's in the original box and doesn't look like it's been tampered with or will be fine. I bought those drugs in Cambodia by the way, flew them back into Thailand, had a couple of domestic flights and then departed from Bangkok back to Australia. Even in Australia no one cares.

I can’t speak to pain meds but I travel with an extensive amount of medication across SE Asia even including insulin. Often with a large supply and in 20 flights I’ve never once been asked anything about any of it.

Yes correct just require a certification from your doctor outlining your medication, stamped and signed. Have been doing this each time with 12 months of medication
