Hello ! I'm currently in Chian Mai. My TR Visa ends on november 18th. I'd like to ask for a Covid extention. I've read a lot of different things about the process and the documents needed.

(This is my first time in Thailand, never had a visa extension before.)

My questions are :

- do I need a TR30 ? (I'm staying in a condo)

- do I need a "reason" fot asking Covid extension ?

- do they need to see a flight back to home country ?

- when should i go to immigration office ? (I mean, does the extension starts the day I ask for it ?)

- anything else i should know ?

Thank you so much for your help :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user in Chiang Mai is inquiring about the process of applying for a COVID-related extension for their TR visa, which is set to expire on November 18th. They seek clarification on whether they need a TM30 form, if a reason is required for the extension, the necessity of showing a flight back home, and the appropriate timing for visiting the immigration office. Responses indicate that while a TM30 may be needed, the primary requirement for the COVID extension is a valid reason which can sometimes be substituted by a signed form provided by immigration. Additionally, they are advised to apply around the expiration date and to first obtain a standard 30-day extension.

Ok, thank you so much for the explanations ! I’ll tell you if I manage to get the Covid extension, or if I can only get the regular 30 days extension.

Chiang mai immigration doesn't request a letter from your embassy for the reason why you cannot go back your country, instead, there is a printed form published by the immigration and you have to sign it as 'unable to return'

I believe you'll need to get your 30 day extension first

I've seen stamps from Chiang Mai where they were stamped for the 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 WITHOUT a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism first 😮 . He's out of nothing asking for a 60 day extension, the worse that would happen is they would issue him a 30 day extension

You *MAY* need to submit a TM30. ASK your property owner if they submitted a TM30 for you.

>do I need a "reason" fot asking Covid extension ?

Yes. A valid reason is one of the following:

1. A letter from your embassy saying you can not return, OR;

2. A print out from your embassy website saying they don’t issue the letters, OR;

3. A print out of a letter from the embassy saying they don't issue those letters.

(I know, those don't seem like reasons, but it is what it is).

Check your embassy's website first to see what the wording is.

> do they need to see a flight back to home country ?

Usually not.

>when should i go to immigration office ?

The 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 almost always begins on the day you apply for it. Apply for it on around November 18 or thereabouts.

HOWEVER, Most immigration offices do not issue a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 without first issuing you a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism.

Did you already get your 30 day extension of stay yet?
