Interesting, a retirement visa is required for a bank account, and a bank account is required for a retirement visa, go figure.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the procedural intricacies of obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand, highlighting the need for a Thai bank account to hold 800,000 THB as part of the visa process. It emphasizes the logical sequence of obtaining a Non-Immigrant Visa before entering Thailand, which allows one to open a bank account and subsequently apply for a retirement visa extension. Many comments reflect on the complications arising from misunderstandings about the requirements and banking processes, especially post-COVID, as well as the challenges faced by expats navigating the system.

A bank account is indeed required for a retirement visa but it doesn't have to be a Thai bank account for your initial 3 month Non O visa. Then on that 3 month Non O you can open a Thai bank account, Bangkok bank wouldn't open one for me on the 3 month visa but K Bank did.

I must say ……. I just received a Visa for 12 months in one hour…. The immigration contacted a man who was waiting for me in my Thai bank. The Man had the bank register 800 000THB on my account . The Bank issued a Certificate stating the money on my account . The Bank then cancelled the transferred money. I returned to Immigration. I was asked for

15 000THB + 3 800 THB.

And my passport was stamped until October 14 2026.

I would not have suspected Immigration would/could liaise with obvious oblique procedures …….

Surprising Thailand

I know of the malice “Agents” use, but practically the end user is not aware of what really happens.

I prepared the long list of documents asked by the Thai Administration on Internet . None of these documents were asked to me this morning and it was the Administration which connected with a ……

How did you think it worked between agents and immigration? Every agent pays immigration for the service. The only thing that's borderline not ok (at for example Bangkok Bank) is the 800k transfer to your account.

Interesting indeed. Even more so because a “retirement visa” doesn’t exist.

You use some arbitrary wording for two completely different things, and then you can’t figure it out.

I’d say “Duh!”

I think you need to reword your post.

If I’m correct you’re saying that once you’re in Thailand and want an extension of stay on your 90 day visa you need a bank account. BUT many of the banks are saying you must have the extension of stay before you can have a bank account.

Is that what you’re trying to say?

Not so sure about that now.

Asked in BKk and Isan for a bank account with my Non - 0 Retierement Visa.

They want a yellow book, work permit, marrige certificate, int. Driving licence and so on.

The yellow book can be issued when I‘m 6 Month in the country, was today the opinion at the amptor…

Like that my extention will not work out.

Everything else i have for it…

most generally need certificate of residence which you get from immigration. Many are here to retire so no work permit, renting a condo so no yellow book

Best thing is to get the non o for 3 months in your home country and then open your bank account in the first month to get your 800k in there with 2 months + before your extension requirement. Pretty easy still

If you think about it, the visa process is very logical in that you should apply for the correct long term visa (retirement/marriage etc) before coming to Thailand. If you do that you can open a bank account and extend your stay.

If you arrive as a tourist and decide to retire here afterwards, then obviously it's going to be more difficult for you and possibly involve having to pay someone to assist you.

I think the problem is that Thailand has been very lenient in the past allowing people to open bank accounts and apply for visas, but this has been abused by criminals and they have quite rightly tightened the rules.

The problem is in the wording and people insisting on using “retirement visa” when Thailand doesn’t have anything called “retirement visa”.

The correct wording is “non-immigrant O visa based on retirement “ and the other thing is a “one year extension of stay based on retirement”. The latter is not even a visa…

technically it's still not based on retirement. It's purely based on being at least 50 years old. The translation from Thai to English is something like "visa for the purpose of living out your remaining years"

I am on a non-o 90 day. Not retirement at all.

So “retirement visa” is good for people who are to lazy to type and who like to confuse each other.

What is a “retirement visa” really?

A visa is used to enter a country. Yes, a bank account is required. The bank account in your home country when you apply for the retirement visa through the Thai embassy there.

Then when you use that visa you purchased from the embassy showing proof of funds in your bank account back home, you can open a bank account since you entered with a non-immigrant visa. Then you use this bank account to apply for the subsequent extension.

This is the way the process is supposed to work, and the way it does work if done properly.
