What are the requirements and rules for the Thai retirement visa and the 800k THB deposit?

Hi! A couple questions about obtaining a retirement visa:

I currently have a 1 year Non-O extension based on marriage that expires in March 2026. Iโ€™m considering transitioning to a retirement visa sometime between now and then.

My first question is re the 800k THB in-bank. I understand it needs to be seasoned in a Thai bank account for 2 months before application. Iโ€™ve read conflicting descriptions of what can be done with the 800k once the retirement visa has been approved/ stamp placed in passport though.

Some have said that the 800k needs to be kept in the account as is throughout the year (even after the application process has been completed). Is that correct? This makes no sense to me. Rather, I believe once you have received the retirement stamp, you can start withdrawing funds from said account.

When, can one begin to withdraw from their 800k deposit retirement requirement after the retirement visa has been received?

Also, I already have about 200k in my Thai account. Can I just Xfer an additional 600k from my foreign account to meet the requirement, or do I have to make a single 800k transfer from a foreign account. (I know this is immigration office specific. I would be applying at the Chiang Mai office.)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the requirements for obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand, particularly concerning the 800,000 THB bank deposit. It must be in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months before applying for the retirement extension and retained for an additional 3 months post-approval, during which the balance must not fall below 400,000 THB for the remainder of the year. Additionally, the user queried about transferring funds from a foreign account and raising concerns about transitioning from a marriage visa to a retirement visa.

You will not be transitioning to a retirement visa. You will be applying for an extention of stay based on being over 50 years of age.

The 800k minimum must be in your account 2 months before you apply for your next extension then stay there for another 3 months after your extension is granted. Then you can withdraw some funds but the balance must be a minimum of 400k for the rest of the 12 month extension. If you use the 800k for your next extension then again it needs to back at 800k two months before you apply.

Great info. Thanks.

some said, but even when it makes sense by foreigners it does not mean it is correct.

This is a copy of the police order.

BTW it is NOT a retirement visa, but an 1 year Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age and willing to sit out the rest of your life in Thailand, (shortcut retirement)

The seasoning of the 800K banked money method for a retirement extension is as follows

You need to have 800K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you apply for the extension,

Then the 800K baht stays in the account for 3 months after the extension is granted

AND

Then after that the balance cannot go below 400K baht the rest of the year.

Yep, there's no proof of funds origin required or proof that the funds came from abroad, only that you have 800K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you apply for the extension

Remember because you're now on a marriage extension and want to 'change the reason' for the extension to retirement this new year extension will not be added to the date your current stamp expires. It will start the day you apply. So you would want to apply close to your current expiration date to not lose the time on it

Why would you go from a marriage visa to a retirement visa? If you are getting divorced I understand and am sorry for you.

What

and Hans B have said above pretty much sum up why.

When I was new here in Thailand we came to Chaengwattana with all the documents to get my first extension of stay based on marriage (changing from tourist I bought in my hometown) a very nice elder officer said, oh marriage... why don't you apply for a extension of stay based on retirement instead, it's much easier, I'll help you. She filled in all the documents, I just signed and everything was finished within one hour. Amazing service, I have never seen her since then.

a yearly extension based on marriage takes a PILE 'O PAPER and you get a 30 day under consideration stamp then go back to get the year inked in

Whereas an extension based on retirement doesn't "use as many trees" and is issued on the spot.

Many MANY people married to thaiz (who aren't getting divorced) opt for the retirement extension over the marriage one

Thank you for the answer. I have been looking at both and wondering which one would be best for me.
