ORIGINAL POSTER
I read the requirements for retirement visa which requires proof of money deposit in a local thai bank. The question is how can one opens a Thai bank a/c and deposit money before successfully getting the visa.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a Thai bank account for the retirement visa (Non Immigrant O visa), you typically need your passport, a valid visa, and sometimes a certificate of residence. It's advisable to visit multiple bank branches, as some may not accept foreigners readily. The initial deposit amount should generally be at least 400,000 Baht. Many expats have successfully opened accounts by explaining their situation to bank staff or bringing a Thai friend for assistance.

And with the use of the simple Retirement Visa all the confusion starts. There is the Non Immigrant O visa, which you can apply for at a Thai Embassy/Consulate or inside Thailand at Immigration Office, the Non Immigrant O-A Visa and the Non Immigrant O-X Visa which you can only apply for at your country of residence. All these 3 visa's all called Retirement Visa to make it easy, but all three have different requirements, so all the comments are wrong or right, just depending on which visa they refer to. To make it even more complicated, if you enter Thailand on one of these Visas you can apply for an Extension Of Stay and even that is called retirement visa. I hope you can follow this, please make a new post with a clear statement what kind of Visa you like and where you like to apply. For now the confusion is bringing you no answers so I will close commenting.

If you want to apply for the Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age inside Thailand, yes, you need a Thai bank account. Some banks will refuse you to open an account. Get the certificate of residence from Immigration, make copy of your passport Id page. Visit several branches and ask, or take a Thai friend to his bank and let him explain why you want to open the bank account.

You just need your Passport copy with a valid visa and a rental contract.

Grab the two, walk to any official bank and it sill be done in no time after just verification.

The least amount should be 400K except it has change of recent. Thanks and good luck. Welcome to the Land of Legendary solidarity, full of cute beaches, bitches and chilly foods.

You mean one year extension of stay based on retirement don't you ??.... Steve Greir beat me to it ;)
Steve *******
@Richard ******
Despite the fact that Thai immigration write retired on your extention of stay, you dont actually have to be retired to obtain it, all you have to be is over 50 years old

Always nice: It will be: Based on being over 50 years of age and sitting out the rest of his/hers live. But to be nice and avoid a long stamp in your passport Immigration use the simple text that every foreigner understand: Retirement.

Richard Clark The REQUIREMENT is being over 50, The reason is NOT retirement! Im over 50 and not retired
Richard *******
@Steve ******
The REQUIREMENT is being over 50 ( and also having sufficient funds as outlined). The REASON is retirement.

Obviously better than you

@Steve ******
Do you not understand basic english ??
Steve *******
@Richard ******
You said it! The reason is being 50 years or older, not retirement
Richard *******
@Steve ******
I disagree. The requirement is to be 50 years or older. The reason you state in the TM.7 is "retirement". This is also what is stamped into your passport by immigration.
Steve *******
@Richard ******
It's a misnomer, it's based on being over 50 years old, many people over 50 have it but arent retired

It's a O Visa.

Ordinary.

You get this Visa and apply for an extension. The retirement extension is for 12 months.

Based on age 50 or more.

You need to report residence every 90 days you are in Thailand.

Several ways to obtain the above.

Probably discussed at length previously.

You dont have to have 800,000 baht in a thai bank account.

@Steve ******
On my extension it says "Retirement", not sure about yours.
Steve *******
@Richard ******
based on being over 50, not retirement
Steve *******
There's no "retirement visa" as such but if you want to apply for a 1 year extention of stay based on being over 50 years old then you will need and can open a bank account at any Thai bank
Vicky *******
Your Embassy can tell about this very well
Steve *******
@Vicky ******
How will your embassy "tell the way"?
Steve *******
@David ******
"Documented proof of funds" wont help you open a Thai bank account
Vicky *******
@Steve ******
i mean, Embassy can tell the way
Jonn *********
@Steve ******
No but can provide documented proof of funds.

Not needed to be in a thai bank account.

Your embassy wont help with setting up a Thai bank account

When I was applying for Non-O a few years ago I just explained to the bank that I was in the process of applying for the visa and they were fine. You should try visiting smaller branches of banks and be prepared for rejections. I originally tried SCB and was told they would call me when they confirmed with head office. I'm still waiting on that call. I literally went next door to a small branch of Kasikorn Bank and was setup within 30 minutes.

it's not complicated, I opened it at the krungsri bank of the mbk mall, you just need a passport and a rental contract
Justin *******
So it is just an atm card. That is not going to work. Can't buy airline tickets, use lazada, book hotels, etc.

Justin *******
