Hi there! I'm currently going through the process of applying for a work permit and heading to Penang, Malaysia on Sunday to get the non b visa, however, there's a wp3 form that we have been told cannot be given until I've already left the country and I may end up being in Malaysia through the 5-7 day processing period. But have also been told some go to Malaysia already with the form. What is the experience of others who have applied for work permits and non b visas? How long did you have to stay in Malaysia for?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process for obtaining a Non-B visa while applying for a work permit can be confusing, especially regarding the WP3 form, which must be obtained from the Ministry of Labour after leaving Thailand. Some individuals have faced delays because the form is provided only when out of the country, while others have reported quicker experiences if their employer is efficient. Typically, one may need to stay in Malaysia for 5-7 days for the processing of the Non-B visa, although timings can vary.

There is also a cover form letter prepared by a Labor Ministry officer.. The WP.3 can be receipted same day with a stamped copy given to your employer's staff member or to an agent. The cover form letter may be done quickly or it could take several days ... Your representative who goes to the Labor Ministry may be required to show to the LM officer photos you take of the Thailand Exit Stamp and the Malaysian Entry Stamps in your passport (sent back by Messenger, Line, WhatsApp, etc.) before either document is sent

The WP3 form is gotten from the Ministry of Labour when you're OUT of the country. I know more than a few people who were hung up waiting for that document and they couldn't turn in their application at the consulate.

If the place you're working for is on top of it, they should be able to get the WP3 and get it to you in a day or two I would imagine.

Unless I'm mistaken, right now the ONLY consulate around that will let you apply for a Non-B without a proof of receipt of applying for a work permit is the one in Hong Kong.

thank you so much for your help! The Ministry of Labour said that the processing time could be 5-7 days, any experiences of it being less than this or anything? Just trying to get a rough idea of how long I'll be in penang for
