What is the difference between a tourist visa and a special tourist visa in Thailand?
Hello, What is the difference in between a tourist visa and a special tourist visa? I understood they can all be extended, so what’s the catch?
Answer summary
A tourist visa allows for a 60-day stay with a one-time 30-day extension, while a special tourist visa (STV) permits a longer stay of 90 days, with the possibility of two additional 90-day extensions. However, the STV cannot be changed to another visa while in Thailand, and obtaining it is more complicated.

the lenght of the admitted stay is the difference. The Single Entry Tourist Visa gives you 60 days upon entry and can be extended once, by 30 more days. The STV gives you 90 days on entry, and can be extended two more times by another 90 days

Tourist visa is 60 days on arrival plus 30 extension 1900 Thai baht at immigration.
...STV is 3+3+3 months = max 9 months stay.
...No change of it allowed to another visa inside Thailand.
...No added extensions.
...More complicated to get.
