TLDR : Answer Summary
The key differences between a Tourist Exemption Visa and a Tourist Visa in Thailand are as follows: 1. A Tourist Exemption Visa, referred to as 'visa exempt', allows citizens from certain countries to enter Thailand without a visa for up to 45 days (or 30 days after September 30). It can be extended for an additional 30 days for a fee. 2. A Tourist Visa is obtained from a Thai embassy or consulate, valid for 90 days with an initial stay of 60 days upon entry, which can also be extended for 30 days for a fee. Some countries have special agreements that may allow longer stays.

I'm going to shut this down.

1. A visa exempt is a "visa free" entry, and when a person arrives can stay in Thailand for 45 days. Only a certain number of countries qualify for this visa exempt, see the attached list. It can be extended ONCE for another 30 days for 1,900 THB.

2. A tourist visa is a visa that's placed in your passport by a Thai consulate. This visa is good for 90 days, and on entry, lets you stay for 60 days. It can be extended ONCE for another 30 days for 1,900 THB.

3. SOME countries have a bilateral agreement. On entry, a person may be stamped for 30 or 90 days. See the attached list below. Talk to your local immigration office if you qualify for an extension of stay.

4. To enter Thailand, you will need a Certificate of Entry, and to go through some type of 15 day quarantine at your own expense. GO to your local Thai consulate's website for information on how to apply for a Certificate of Entry. In Google type

Thai Consulate [country name here]

5. A person may be able to apply for a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19. The last day this extension of stay is being sold is September 27th. The cost for this extension of stay is for 1,900 THB.

Thank you.

1. There is no such thing as a tourist exemption visa. What you are thinking about is a visa exempt. This allows people from a certain amount of countries to enter Thailand WITHOUT a visa, and can stay for 45 days (until September 30, after that it'll go down to 30 days).

2. A Single Entry Tourist Visa is purchased at the local Thai embassy. This is 2K THB *IN LOCAL CURRENCY*, and allows a person to stay for 60 days. This is available to almost all nationalities.

I believe I'm attaching the latest list of the countries that are on the visa exempt scheme.

I have Brazilian, I never got 90 days exempted is this something new?

People from Brazil are not on the 30 day (now 45 day) visa exempt. People from Brazil enter on a bilateral agreement where they are granted a 90 day bilateral agreement stamp.

Perfect thanks. So to make use of the possible COVID extensions it's best to go in on a Tourist Visa vs just no visa and then getting one?

Thanks. I'm committed to coming to Phuket now so I might as well see how it goes.

The last day they are selling the 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 is September 27. It is NOT used as a substitute for a long-term visa.

At most immigration offices, you must take a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism before they would sell you a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19.

You would not have enough time to go on a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19

@Benjamin *****
no that's fine. It's only a short term thing waiting for the office to reopen to process the visa.

I recommend staying out of Thailand until after "the office" reopens and can process the actual visa you should have.

Visa exemption is not a visa and only available on arrival to certain country's passport holders
