What is the correct information to enter in the 'Visa Number' section of the arrival card when using a re-entry permit in Thailand?

One minor point. When returning to Chiang Mai on a re-entry permit, I was pulled up by an IO for incorrectly putting my visa number in the space on the arrival card entitled 'visa number'. Apparently, this should show the re-entry stamp number. He made the amendment for me.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering the 'visa number' on the arrival card (TM.6) in Thailand, one must use the re-entry permit number if they are holding a re-entry permit rather than a visa. This distinction is important as the visa number and re-entry permit number are different, and failing to correctly identify which number to use may result in confusion with immigration officials.

Okay, so now we know IF you are on a VISA <- meaning a sticker from a thai consulate from another country, you put that number on it.

BUT

IF you are on an extension of stay <- a STAMP from the immigration office INSIDE the country & have a re-entry permit <- also a stamp from the immigration office inside the country; Put the re-entry permit number on the "visa number" spot of the TM.6..

Example:

In this example image the extension of stay number is
*****
********
<- that is NOT the number you put on the TM.6 card

the re-entry permit number is
*****
********
<- that IS the number you put on the TM.6 card

If you have a visa you put the visa number. If you have a reentry permit, you put the reentry permit number.

It becomes a problem if you don't do it right, immigration miss it and then stamp you in wrongly. You've then got too go and sort it out

@Alan ******
Exactly my point 😊

whatever it is, the form isn’t very clear about the required information.

So what use was a reentry permit? You would either have a single entry visa unused, a multiple entry visa not requiring a reentry permit or a reentry permit keeping an extension of stay alive or a reentry permit keeping the end date of a visa alive and the remainder left on it.

@Ron ******
the visa had not been stamped 'used'.

No. Your visa would of been finished hence you had a reentry permit 😊

I had both a visa and a re-entry stamp.

That makes sense but it's not clear on the form...

On my four return trips to Bangkok I have always entered my Visa Number in this space and have never been pulled up. After what Geoff passed on, should this space be left blank, even though the heading is “Visa Number”?

So you made a mistake, the IO is informing this to you and correct the mistake and you call this a minor point? I hope minor point of yourself in stead of the correction made by Immigration.

@Geoff ******
same happened to me in CM last week!

An easy mistake to make, as the form ostensibly requires a 'visa number', not a re-entry stamp number. I only mention it to help others not make the same error. No big deal...
