Going to be applying for a re entry permit next week , but what exactly is it ? A stamp , a card ., is it date specific ? Do I need to book the return flight before I apply ?

Over the duration of my setv 60 + 30 I will be looking to get two re entry permits . I don’t suppose I can get two at the same time ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A re-entry permit in Thailand is necessary for foreigners who wish to leave the country without losing their entry stamp. It comes in two forms: a single re-entry permit costing 1,000 baht and a multiple re-entry permit for 3,800 baht. The permit does not extend the duration of stay but allows you to return without invalidating your visa. It is advisable to apply for the permit before booking your return flight. Additionally, you cannot obtain two re-entry permits simultaneously.

Do keep in mind

, a re-entry permit doesn't add anymore days to your original entry stamp. It just keeps it from canceling when you exit the country and as long as you return before that date you'll get stamped in until then.

Thank you . Lost sight of that . Something I was aware of last June but forgot since moving onto setv . Think original post now comprehensively answered so going to lock comments . Thank you all

Andy the two visa exempt per year only applies to land entries, not air. So presuming you are flying back from the UK you can get a visa exempt at the airport on return and it doesn't take away from your two land entries per year.

Sure but you can only get two visa exempt a year . As I only got my setv on Friday it would not make sense to loose it next week . Situations outside my control necessitate a return UK next week . Have no issue getting the re entry permit or permits nor getting the extension . Both fit my requirements at this present time .

the reason it is mentioned that it doesn't give you any more time is that for most Westerners on a tourist visa, there is little benefit or point to getting a re-entry permit, as they will get a visa-exempt stamp for free coming back anyway (which can also be extended for 30 days).

You CAN get a re-entry permit on a tourist visa, or extension, but are you sure you actually need one? The main use case for them on tourist visas is for nationals of countries that are NOT eligible for visa-free entry, where their visa is their only means of getting into Thailand and they need to keep it active while visiting Angkor Wat or whatever.

There are some really marginal edge cases where it make make sense even for a Westerner, but make sure there is actually any point. I certainly don't see why you would want a re-entry on your extension, it only really makes sense if you would be leaving and re-entering in the first 30 days... but there can be edge cases where it makes sense, just make sure it actually is something you need to do, rather than just coming back and getting a free 30 day stamp.

Thank you . Did report my local immigration were doing the extension within 24 hrs arrival back in Thailand . Going down Monday to do the TM30 and will hopefully get my extension same time . Ideally would try and get the re entry permit at the same time but will see what is realistic . Know now that 100 days is a long time out here and the situation might have changed

Andy Steele you can also get one single reentry permit while on the original 60 days, then once you left Thailand and came back you extend for 30 days, then get another single reentry permit while on the extension. This is actually the situation I am in right now.

Actually adding in that I guess the best practice is to get the extension then the re entry permit to get validity for 60+30

perfect . I can think of only one other thing and that is my visa number for the arrival card remains the number on the setv , only asking as I see the re entry permit has a number .

it's a stamp

You can buy a single re-entry permit at 1,000 baht or a multiple re-entry permit at 3,800 baht.
