What is the best way to handle a Thailand visa extension with children when traveling between Chiang Mai and Phuket?

Hello everyone! I'd like to know what you would do if you were in my situation... I'm traveling with my wife and infant son...

We're currently in Chiang Mai, leaving for Phuket around March 1st. Our 30 day visa extension expires March 5th. We leave Thailand April 15th. Here are our options:

1- Ideally we'd go to immigration in Chiang Mai late February, get the 60 days and be all done. (I don't think this is a good idea because if we only get 15 days we'll be in Phuket when they expire and I believe you cannot use two different immigration offices for the Covid extension.)

2- Go to immigration in Chiang Mai in late February and if we only get 15 days can we then we'd have to get the other 45 days from the immigration office in Phuket. (Same issue as above, using two different immigration offices is not possible)

3- We could apply for the extension in Phuket in early March but we'll be staying in the south so we'd like to avoid the two 1 hour return car rides with a baby. (This is definitely the safest option but the one we're trying to avoid)

4- We could also apply for the extension in Chiang Mai next week, then return for the remaining 45 days before leaving for Phuket. (Although I've read that you can't get the extension that far away from the date your visa expires)

Any thoughts?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on the best way to handle their visa extension in Thailand, given their travel plans from Chiang Mai to Phuket with their wife and infant son. Their current visa extension expires on March 5th, and they plan to leave Thailand on April 15th. The user outlines several options but is uncertain about the process and feasibility, considering they can't use two different immigration offices for the extension. Comments suggest seeking clarification directly from immigration officers in Chiang Mai and emphasize that the length of the extension issued may depend on when they apply.

Did you come in on visa exempt or a visa

If you explain you're going from chiang mai to phuket to the officer THEY will tell you what to do. You'll also save yourself hours IN the office doing it in chiang mai and not phuket (besides the drive back and forth). Why not ask those who can solve your issue (immigration officer) to help instead of asking all of us to play multiple choice all based on "what ifs"???? I promise that every single day then encounter your exact situation multiple times. Their clients are tourists and tourists TOUR lol

So by your logic we should close this group and just ask any visa related question at the immigration office?

if you think that's what my comment meant its quite clear you didn't get "my logic".

And yes Covid extension first time from date applied

Whatever your reason is related to Covid. They may be able to help you at immigration.

on covid extention, what reason do I give them?

#2 not how it works Covid extensions are 60 days I think you are meaning the "under review time" but this isn't something you add up and can get at multiple immigration offices. I believe in Phuket you get your stamps same day (have also heard pick up passports next day) so just find out the process in Chiang Mai and decide from there. May be ideal go in Chiang Mai around 60 days before your fly out date and have stamps before heading to Phuket if transportation in Phuket is an issue for you. Do you have the list of everything you need?

Good luck with it

Hi! I did mention in parenthesis that I didn't think #2 option wouldn't work because of the different immigration offices. Yes all the paperwork is in order!

You're within 30 days of your current stamp, so you should be fine going next week. Some offices ask you to only come back when you have a few days left, but I don't recall seeing anyone reporting that from Chiang Mai.

Often your first Covid extension starts the day you apply, so the immigration officers may suggest you return later because they think they are helping you to not waste days, but if you say you want to apply that day anyways they should let you.

The Covid extension first time is from application date and yes date applied counts as a day nothing to do with test N Go and test days, if 2nd Covid extension then it's added to existing date. Your passport would have been stamped on arrival then again when you did 30 day extension

There's nothing there!

@Sean *******
There has to be. We are talking about your permission to stay (stay until date). You have to have one. It's not possible to be in Thailand legally without one.

Thanks! And just to be clear, day 1 would be the day I apply (say March 1st), day 15 is then March 15th, and I'd have to leave on/before day 60? I ask because with the test and go PCR testeing the day we arrived was counted as day 0...

@Sean *******
the expiry date of any extension is stamped into your passport....
