What are the current requirements for extending a Non-O visa in Thailand, particularly regarding bank statements?

I applied for my second extension today. Everything went smoothly thanks to the kind and helpful officers at Jomtien Immigration. After accepting my documents, they gave me a form stating I need to bring an updated bank statement/bankbook to the same counter along with my next 90-day report. I'm aware of the financial requirements to keep the extension valid, but I don't remember receiving this document after my first extension last year โ€” seems like a new requirement to me.

This prompted discussions among other users about various types of visas, including the Non-O and retirement visas, and how financial requirements can impact extensions. Community members shared their insights about the application process, bank account requirements, and possible visa options for expats aiming to stay longer in Thailand.

I greatly appreciate the many helpful replies ๐Ÿ™. My first step will be to transfer 800k thb to my Bangkok bank account asap. Im really liking the non-O direction at this point. If I understand correctly, with non-o, I get 90 days... and, I can go into the immigration office on koh chang and get 30 day extension for 1,900 thb, giving me 120 days total, which exceeds by planned itinerary. Is this correct?? ๐Ÿค”

Apply for your 90 day Non-O based on retirement in USA. Cheap as chips. And extension 1900 tbt. Re-entry permit is a little extra but gives you access to return before the 12 months expires without needing another visa. And you don't need an agent.

You're on the right track with considering Option 2: Get a visa agent to sort it all out. It will save you a ton of time and stress. Not expensive for the value received.

Do it online on a Thai government web site

Sounds like you were unlucky because of covid, otherwise I think you were on the best visa for you.

Applying for a 90 day non-O visa based on being over 50 at your Thai Embassy in your home country is the simplest and cheapest way to do it.

Then when you enter Thailand transfer 800,000 baht into your account, get the list of requirements from your immigration office, collect everything on the list and after your money has seasoned for 2 months go to immigration and extend your stay for 12 months at a cost of 1,900 baht. It's easy and you can repeat the final step annually. Don't forget to get a re-entry permit at the same time as you extend your stay. Good luck.

The 'retirement visa' you say you had previously was it the full '12 month extention of stay' or was it just the initial 'non-O visa' you used to enter Thailand before getting the extension. If it was the 12 month extension then you must have already opened a Thai bank account and if you still have that account you could transfer the 800,000 Baht 2 months before you come then it would already be 'seasoned' and you should be able to get the 12 month extension of stay immediately when you arrive. If however it was just the non-O entry visa issued with the purpose of retiring to Thailand then you would have to do the same as you did last time and get a new non-O visa, open a Thai bank account when you arrive, transfer 800,000 Baht into that account within the first month and then after 2 months you can apply for the extension of stay which a lot of people just refer to as a 'retirement visa'. I'm no immigration expert and some immigration officers might interprete things differently from others so although having transfered the money while outside of Thailand might be OK with one officer it might not with another and they might expect you to wait 2 months from entering.

Adam Wollander you are welcome. The money transfer has to show as an international transfer. Other than that, the extension is a few photocopies of documents, passport photos, proof from your bank and one a4 form with about 15 questions((name, passport number, date arrived in Thailand, address etc). You sometimes need to sign a couple of other forms, but that's it. It takes me about 30 minutes at immigration each year to extend, so you don't need an agent.

Another option with the Non-O is to use it to get your 90 days entry stamp then before the 90 days is up do a border bounce as you used to do on your METV and re-enter visa exempt for a new 60 or 30 day entry stamp which can be extended for 30 days giving you a grand total of up to 180 or 150 days in Thailand. This option does not need a Thai bank account for your once a year stays of 4 months or so and every entry is not a tourism entry.

Just really want to stay on koh chang and relax, unwind, on island time..... If necessary I'll probably go check out Vietnam or Philippines for a week, then return. Been to other bordering countries before, and no desire to go back to them

You don't have many options for a stay of 115 days without having to leave Thailand. With an METV you would have to leave and return to get that much time, on the plus side you wouldn't travel to the consulate to apply for it, these days you apply on line using the evisa website although the application will still be processed by that consulate.

Your other option is to apply for 1 of 2 retirement visa options, again online via the evisa website before you travel.

1. Get a 90 day Non-O visa, arrive in Thailand, put a minimum of 800k baht in your thai bank and once it's been there for 2 months apply for a 12 month extension of stay.

2. Get a 12 month Non-OA visa before you travel. This visa requires a police check, medical certificate and insurance but you can use funds in your home bank for it so you don't need money in a Thai bank

. Thank you... do you think my entry stamp in December will still be 60 days + 30, or back to 30 days+30 extension? Hard to say, I know, but it certainly affects my itinerary planning. I just want to stay and live on koh chang without unwanted international travel to nearby countries, although I'll make the most out of it if it's the only alternative.. Haven't been to Vietnam yet, so maybe that's in the realm of possibilities for a week

Adam Wollander non-O based on retirement applied for before you arrive gives you 90 days, you can extend for a year. Would that not be best way for you?

Lynnette Munoz or border bounce after 90 if he only wants to stay 4 to 5 months then no Thai bank account and extension needed

Lynnette Munoz Thank you. I will look into that

do you mean on the METV? That won't change from 60 + 30 per entry. The proposed changes will only affect visa exempt entries.

I was referring to just normal visa on arrival (with pre-arrival now) normal entry... im not up to date on the ever-changing terminology. It would be not that difficult, once in Thailand, to go thru the steps and get it done... looking closely now at the non-o. thank you
@John *********
for your advise! Truly appreciated ๐Ÿ™

Nobody can say when, or even if the current visa exempt rules will change from 60 days to 30. If it could cause you a problem just apply for a tourist visa

@John *********
I was referring to normally visa-exempt entry, if I choose that option. I've already made hotel booking that will be affected if I have to travel out of country after 30+30 vs 60+30

Once you have it you can enter and do extension for 12 months after you've banked and seasoned 800k tbt in your Thai bank account. 1900 tbt plus a re-entry permit cost.

Lynnette Munoz with my previous 10 year retirement visa, issued in feb 2020, I would have been set until 2030. It required re-entry within 15 months after departure. Because of travel restrictions during the co$vid, I was unable to return within the time frame required, and, poof.. gone

Not sure why the retirement visa was so expensive. Check price on relevant embassy to you. Most are done online.

I don't know what you did last time as you mentioned previously having a 10 year visa. But the process of obtaining a Non-O or a Non-OA visa is simple. Similarly an extension of a Non-O is straightforward, you just need the list of requirements from the local immigration office and meet them. Thousands of people do this every year
