TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the disappearance of a missing person, presumed to be a foreigner, who was last seen kayaking in Khao Sok National Park, Thailand. Community members are expressing concern and sharing information about the situation. Some comment on the lack of phone signal and the distance from Bangkok, while others suggest informing local authorities about the missing person. Tragically, further comments reveal that the man's body was later found in the dam, prompting discussions about safety measures and the circumstances leading to his drowning.

Really sorry to hear of your loss. May he rest in peace.

Reflecting on this tragic accident, a thought has come to mind - why wasn't he instructed to wear a life jacket? I know safety is a personal responsibility but I was forced to wear a life jacket in a tiny rockpool waterfall in Erawan national park. I thought the same stuff would be happening at each national park where people are involved in water activities. What's the point of forcing me to wear it in the tiny rock pool when this guy died in 90 meter deep water because he wasn't told to wear one? Thailand doesn't make sense.

Sadly this mans body was recovered from the lake. I think it is a disgrace that the people with him just left him to drown.

Parts of the story don't add up. Witnesses reported him saying that he would swim back to shore after his kayak capsized. If he could swim, how on earth did he drown? If he couldn't swim which seems to be the case then why would he say he was swimming back and not ask for help? It really doesn't make sense. Either the witnesses are lying or something out of the ordinary happened which caused him to drown e.g. cardiac event

yes I have been thinking the same from when I first read this post and news articles.

It is on local news already. But it is in Thai. From the news it says he was missing while swimming around his hotel in the dam yesterday evening. They also search for him yesterday but not found.

Today they do underwater search and found his body around hotel at the 15m depth.

Rip and sorry for the loss

For other people travel to the dam, pleases wear a life jacket while swimming in the dam for your own safety. The depth of water is 90+ m.

I am sincerely sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine what you are going through. I know this is a sensitive time, but so that I and other travellers can be aware of the dangers of that national park, are you able to provide some info on what exactly happened to him and what has resulted in his passing? Rest in peace Odhran.

How about 1. Looking at the Park site so you knw what and where you are talking about. 2. Inform the Park authorities of the missing person.

3. Inform the Royal Thai Police station

Someone saw his kayak tip over but did not try to help him? No tour guide there? Bangkok or Khao Sok they are many hundreds of kilometres apart. This story doesnt quite seem to add up.

@David *********
I just saw more reliable news than a Facebook post

it is not clear about how big his group was or if he was on a tour. I have done a lot of kayaking. Normal procedure if someone capsizes is you use you friends kayaks to right it again and empty most of the water out. If you cant do that then you stay with your kayak or grab onto a friends one.

What you never do is just abandon your friend and hope that they can swim to shore! I wonder also if he was wearing a lifejacket.
Marcos **********
@David *********
I believe it may be the first time he has been in a kayak. There should be no enforcement for stores that rent kayaks.
David **********
@Marcos *********
yes that would explain a lot. Khao Sok is a very big and remote place. It is not somewhere that people should try to learn how to kayak. I hope he is a good swimmer. I still do not understand why his friend or friends left him to sink or swim!!!
David **********
@Marcos *********
thanks for that

@David *********
Do you think it could be fake news?
David **********
@Marcos *********
yes maybe. Or perhaps just a very poorly thought out post that is not going to help find this man at all. Seems to me he is either already drowned in the lake or he has swum to the shore and is OK.

Why the rest of his group abandoned him and did not save him is the big question here. It makes no sense to me at all.
David **********
Khao sok is nowhere near bangkok at all its way down in the south.
Steve ********
Isn't Khao Sok off coast of Phuket?
Richard ********
@Steve *******
No, Phuket is an island - off the coast is ocean.

Someone saw him yet ?

Consider filing a report with the relevant embassy if you are concerned for his welfare.?

I hope you find him! So sad!
Garfunkle *************
Khao Sok National Park has no phone signal. This may be why you have not heard from him.

Also, it's nowhere near Bangkok. That national park is in the far south of Thailand, near the Malaysian border.

How could you have known his kayak tipped over if he was alone and had no phone service?
Richard ********
@Clark *********
Not near the Malaysian border.
Garfunkle *************
@Richard *******
Incorrect.

@Clark *********
928 kilometers is hardly "near"
Suthida ******************
Since you say last time seen kayaking I assume he is in the dam. But he cannot go there alone, should be some boat take him there or stay in any hotel there, so someone should report if he is missing. And there is no phone signal in some part of dam, that maybe a reason why you cannot contact.
Jim ********
Try posting in Koh Phangan and Koh Samui groups.
Rampi ********
Were you with him when the boat tipped? Who informed you that his phone and wallet are not with him? Why involve Bangkok? Possible that he does not want to be contacted?
Carlo ******************
Does he swim?
