Not visa-related but a question about drivers licenses. I just got my IDP. Once in BKK will I need to do a road test or just a written test to get a Thailand DL? And if a written test I sure hope it's available in English.
Answer summary
To obtain a Thai driving license with an IDP, you generally need to provide various documents including your IDP, home country driving license, passport, a residency certificate, and a medical certificate. The exact requirements can vary by DLT (Department of Land Transport) office, with some offices requiring you to watch instructional videos and take quizzes, while others might only require basic tests like reaction and color vision tests. It is advisable to confirm specific requirements at your local DLT office and prepare photocopies of all necessary documents. The process can take a few hours.

You need photocopies of the required documents (normally can get done at DLT office) International drivers license, home drivers license, passport page, residence certificate, medical certificate from a clinic. You also have to show them the QR code on your phone from the DLT training video you have to do online. After you hand them over you have to do a reaction test for lights and brakes, and a sense of depth test. You then have to pay 500 baht and get a photo taken. Receive your license in less than an hour. Did mine in Buriram. May vary in other provinces.
My office in Mukdahan required copy of foreign licence, medical certificate, passport copy ID page, last entry and visa page. Gave me a letter to take to immigration who would send residence certificate directly back the DLT within 2 weeks. I had already been to immigration for residence certificate but they would not issue without letter from DLT.
Also had to register for online test, when done you download a QR code to show DLT.
I can go to pick up the licence once the letter from immigration is back.
As mentioned by others, each DLT office seems to have slightly varying requirements.
You can drive in Thailand with your IDP and original driving license issued under your name but you can't get Thailand driving license because you don't have residence certificate.
🚙A tip as the different DLT Offices interpret the requirements differently 😅So go to your DLT office and ask them and you won't have to think about it. See the general requirements in the link below. Good luck 🚘
GentleGoose6420 yes they are 💯 % legitimate licenses. If you have all the requirements they will accompany you to the official licensing office. Basically they hand hold you all the way.
Last week in Nakhon Phanom I showed 3 months visa stamp, drivers license and IDP, medical certificate (100 baht just asked my height and gave it) yellow book, had photocopies just sign each one. I couldn’t do the online learning so the lovely lady let me use the computer there and had to watch 5 videos (2 English, 3 subtitles) and there was a question half way through each video required to proceed. Whole process took 3.5 hours, they even stayed late into 12pm lunch break to get it finished.
Tim Dean I done mine at DLT Khon Kaen, done the elearning modules the day before, handed over my Australian DL and IDP, proof of current address, my yellow house book, passport, medical certificate(Dr only checked my BP). Only had to to the colour test, hand over the money for car and Motorcycle licences, photo taken and licences issued and that was it.
I just gave the license people my UK licence, did the depth perception test and colour test then got Thai license. 200 baht. Never had the IDP. Now have both car and bike license
Bipin Dubey there are other requirements, DL from another country, medical certificate and residency certificate. The Thai DL requires a class with a five questions quiz.
GentleGoose6420 I went to the Bang Chak DLT in Bangkok. They give me a written list of the required documents including a link to watch the movie online. While there I made an appointment earlier than I could have done using the online appointment calendar.
I suggest going to your local DLT first for assistance.
You won't have to do either one. You might need to watch a video and answer a couple quiz questions, but that's it. Just make sure you have your IDP and your home drivers license when you go to apply.
