How does the Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) work for extending my stay in Thailand?

I would love some clarification on my METV, issued May 15th. Which is a 6 month visa. To extend and receive another 60 days, I must leave the country before July 15th (60 days after issue), correct? When I re-enter Thailand must I show the same docs as when I first got the visa ie: bank statement, hotel stay, onward ticket?

Then I can get a 30day extension at a visa office? To make it a 9 month stay?

Must I leave the country at any other time or am I good to go with the above schedule?

Loads of questions....Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks clarification about their Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) issued on May 15, which is valid for six months. They want to confirm that to extend their stay by an additional 60 days they need to leave Thailand before July 15, and upon re-entry, they must present the same documents as when initially applying for the visa. The user also inquires about the possibility of securing a 30-day extension at a visa office, raising questions about whether they need to leave the country multiple times or if one exit suffices for a total of 9 months of stay.

Thank you...I am happy to visit neighboring countries. So getting out of town is no problem.

Ok, got it. I thought because the visa expires Nov 15 that I only had to leave once plus get the extension to add 3 more months.

Thank you so very much, Garrett. I truly appreciate your help. And, yes, US passport holder. :)

Ugh...or get extensions every two months?? Yes, it is quite confusing and I'm learning!

Ha...good thing you mentioned that. I was thinking I would leave on or just before the 15th Nov. But I should return on or just before. Does that mean I should come back in to Thailand just before July 15th as well?

Thanks, Garrett. But where I am confused is that the visa is 6mo. Exit once for the extra 60days, then the extension for 30days = 9 months. Are you saying that I must continue to leave to get 60days to make up the 9months? Meaning leave the country 3 times?

Juile your Visa is valid for six months. That's means you can enter and exit (theoretically) as many times as you want in that six months. Each time you enter, you're allowed to stay for 60 days without going to immigration for a 30 day extension.

After 90 days you have to leave, no matter what, even though your Visa is still valid. Leave, come back for another 60 day stamp, extend again, and just before the date of your VISA expiration (not your entry stamp expiration) for another 60 days. At this point it's almost 8 months, and you can get a final 30 day extension on your entry stamp making it about 9 months.

Confusing, but not really

how are you figuring 9 months only leaving one time 60+30 is 90 days 3 months then to leave and 60 days +30 that’s 6 months you’ll need to leave on more time

Thank you, Rob. So I don't HAVE to leave more than one time to get the 9 months. And I can't get more than 9months.

Julie Fischer you can come and go as many times as you want, up until the last day on the visa. Each time you enter, you'll be stamped in for 60 days. So if you enter the day before the visa expires, you'll get another 60 days. Drawing out the time you can stay in Thailand to around 9 months if you extend the final entry at immigration by 30 days.
