ORIGINAL POSTER
Bangkok Bank just closed my savings account because it is DTV. Tried SCB and Krunsgsti but they both said they do not take DTV as well. Any recommendations? I am currently using TrueMoney to pay bills.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the challenges faced by expats in Thailand with a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) regarding banking options. Many users share their experiences of banks like Bangkok Bank, SCB, and Krungsri not accepting DTV for new accounts. Recommendations include switching to a Non-O visa for eligibility, using digital banking alternatives like Wise and Revolut, or managing with cash and platforms like TrueMoney. Users also suggest paying bills through services like Lazada and advise against unreliable alternatives like TagThai.

I arrived 2 days ago on DTV and use Revolut Premium, I picked up a card for TagThai from KBank at the airport and can top up at any KBank for QR/card payments and a Rabbit card via Klook.

Not had any problems paying for anything as yet…

I know guys in retirement visas. Bank accounts still got locked. 🔒 re-opened after a visit to the bank. I opened my Bangkok Bank account 7 years ago in Bangkok on a non o. Hoping it’s doesn’t get locked. If they do will try to re-open with my Yellow Book.

Get an agent, set up a bank account in the neighboring cambodia which allows Thai QR. Get Wise installed. Use cash for small payments.

Search the group for answers and recommendations.

TagThai is total rubbish, don’t bother using that crap.

Anonymous participant 423 Wise isn’t available for all passports to start with. Wise card isn’t available if you reside in Thailand.

So is Revolut.

Yep, all the small shops use QR transfer which isn’t QR payment. But I would say it’s rather

.

All big shops, and legally registered entities accept QR payment from overseas banks.

Cash is king if you are an expat in Thailand, live on DTV and shop at the local market. Welcome to the new reality.

USD. The whole country is pegged to USD. Even cash which is used within the country is USD.

I use them as they allow SWIFT transfers, issue a proper platinum Visa card that works everywhere, have a Thai QR and can be used for P2P crypto.

BTW leading banks there are owned by Canadian, Japanese, Taiwanese, French, South Korean and Singaporean banking groups. And those guys are no ignorant fools at all.

Anonymous participant 553 yes, so as a non-resident and no long term visa you were able to open a bank account and obtain platinum card? I would absolutely use them in the right circumstance. Interest rates also much higher in Cambodia.

correct. Opened bank acc, got regular Visa card first, got platinum card by mail. All on T-visa being non-resident. Took me 24 hours.

Used a service of the guy from this group who got his account shut during Pattaya Bangkok bank crackdown and started an agency there.

Anonymous participant 553 nice scheme but the Cambodian bank account is worthless: unfortunately it works only with business QR codes in Thailand . And at 99% of shops that use business QR codes , you can use your foreign card like Wise.

Realiza that DTV is NOT eligible for a Thai Bankaccount, so either change to longterm visa, or live without a Thai bankaccount.

Only with 1 year visa can open account.

Mine was closed two days ago. The only option is Non-O visa and yellow book to reopen. Luckily that's the route I'm taking but your only other option is Wise and cash. There are some services that allow QR payment but you have to go to the bank to top-up so it's pointless.

Bills can be paid on Lazada with MasterCard and Visa

I'm on a non O now and opened an SCB account. But my plan is to switch to a DTV when my 1 year Non O expires. Do you know if I can still keep it open or will the bank close it once my visa type changes?

Anonieme deelnemer 350 Nobody can tell ehat will happen, but since you choose to not be a resident that lives in Thailand anymore, but just a tourist that spends some periods in Thailand, you should not be surprised you cannot keep the bank account.

Anonymous participant 350 You will be playing a lottery. They will keep it open for now but maybe they'll check again next year, nobody knows. I think the current wave they called customers first to ask what their visa is. I missed my call so it was temporarily closed as I've gone from ED to Tourist.
