What are the best money management solutions for DTV visa holders in Thailand?

Aug 4, 2025
2 days ago
Hi everyone! Question for fellow DTV visa holders in Thailand 🇹🇭

How are you handling money and daily payments?

Since we can’t open Thai bank accounts (as far as I know), and ATM withdrawals from foreign cards can get expensive, I’m curious what solutions you’ve found for spending, paying locally, or moving money around.

I'm planning to move from Bali in 2–3 months, so I’m trying to get a clear picture of what’s working well for others.

Would also love to hear about any other challenges you’ve faced with the DTV visa... or smart solutions you’ve figured out since arriving.

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks a lot! 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses how Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) holders can manage daily financial transactions in Thailand, particularly focusing on banking options since Thai bank accounts can be challenging to open for expats. The community shares insights on alternative payment methods like TrueMoney, Wise, and Revolut, emphasizing the importance of cash for daily purchases and suggesting the use of prepaid cards and app-based payment systems to navigate local payment challenges. Users highlight their experiences with foreign bank cards, ATM withdrawal fees, and cash management for expenses like rent and everyday shopping.

N26 bank account for the rent, Lazada, shopping Malls, coffee shops and grab.

15k cash from an ATM once a month for things that can be paid cash only.

And Moreta app to scan (Life changing for the Tao Bin Machine lol)

So my only fees are around 5€ for the rent (because I send baht to the landlord) + 250 baht for the atm + around 5€ n26 fee for the atm too.

Wise or depending on amount in baht you wish to withdraw some banks will allow you to buy baht inside the bank good market value and lower fee not an ATM

Just take cash from the ATM… 250 baht fee for

baht. not too bad. compare it to having an account and paying for the Wise transfer fee and the difference will be minimal…

Rent and bigger sums: just use Wise or Revolut or any other fintech company to transfer the money into a thai account.

you can get TrueMoney and tagthai but in my opinion they are not very practical yet as you need cash for top up.

I agree. 250 baht fee for

baht is 1%, and the exchange rate will be better.

The trick is to make large withdrawals, keeps the percentage low.

I opened a schwab account before I moved here so all atm fees come back to me. Have dtv. Cash has been pretty much universally accepted for daily living so no big issues with just that per se, only rare convenience issues. I have a rabbit card for bts and it works in places like 711, turtle, some of the mall/building food courts that want you to get a loadable card to pay instead of cash. I've opened a wise account but only used it once and it wasn't for thailand. If you really want to do the qr payments, there is a loadable card called pay & tour but you need to get it at the bank branches inside the airports. Most regular bank branches don't issue them. I believe you still load those at a bank with cash though. Really, getting a bank account that has 0 international atm fees or refunds them is best so you can access your cash. Cash can be used for just about everything else. Would also recommend getting a fee free credit card (visa or mastercard) to use for online stuff, bigger purchases, anywhere you dont have to use cash and wont charge you a cc fee. HSBC has some branches here if you can look into account types that have no fees abroad. You truly don't need a Thai bank account to live here and opening one on a dtv is a hassle at best, impossible at worst. Absolute last option if you're a native English speaker, you can probably find a short term contract at a school that will get you a working visa. While you're there, open a Thai account since you can keep it even if your employment ends with the school (whether you quit or finish the contract). Good luck

Ivan ************
You can still use cash for almost everything, I have local bank accounts but still mostly use cash. The main thing I value the local bank for is the stuff that needs a local card, like Shopee, although I've heard SOME foreign cards will work on that.

If you can get a good foreign travel card from your home country, ATM use isn't too bad, this does depend on where you are from. For Americans with something like Schwab, using an ATM is as cheap as Wise transfers, even slightly better. You can also try bank counter cash advances, this skips the 250B Thai side fee. Not all will do them but if you look around maybe you can find a bank that will. Most of the cost is your home bank though not this 250B, so important to minimise that. Take the max out of the ATM each time.

Wise lets you do transfers to most Thai accounts and it's often instant, you can use this to pay rent.

The QR system is convenient if you forget cash and just have your phone but it's really a convenience over cash, I have never found a place in Chiang Mai that will not take cash either. In COVID times it was encouraged but that's over now. Maybe in Bangkok.

I am same as you. Have local accounts but use cash for almost everything at shops, cafes, restaurants, bars etc etc. The staff probably prefer cash - more likely to get a tip :-)

My home country banks have all bilateral agreements to use the Thai QR system and Alipay+. Of course Chinese and Thai bank accounts holders also can use their native apps there. So I use QR for everything and Alipay+ for the

I'm always confused why people want to open a bank account? What's the benefit?

Visa - Wise / Cash

Sim card - CC

Grab - CC

Groceries - CC

Rent - Wise

Scooter rental - Cash

Appliance store - CC

Etc. Why is a bank acct so necessary? What am I missing?

Anonymous participant 908 having a Thai bank account allows you to cash out crypto on a Thai crypto exchange. In my case, most of my savings are in crypto and I don't have any source of income, so it's very helpful and saves me a ton in fees. If I had only Wise it would cost me 3.5% in taxes to convert from my country's currency to any other foreign currency. Also, Wise only allows me to withdraw around $300 USD from ATMs outside of my country. Any amount above that is charged extra 1.75%.

I recommend you to apply True money to pay 7-11 and some restaurants ,it’s very convenient. And you also can use your Visa card to pay. Some shop in shopping centers don’t accept cash anymore. And for online shopping better if use Cash on Delivery.

In the future if it’s easier to apply bank account I recommend TTB bank it’s very useful and only pay for debit card 350thb/year.

Get a Revolut or Wise card and use that for payments where they accept cards, and for online payments.

yes 50k at a True shop. need to find that shop first. not everyone stays in bangkok 🤣 3k is the limit at any 7-11. just stating a fact.
Alex *********
@Dany *******
I have the DTV visa and I stay here multiple months. You can bring up to 10k us$ each time u enter the country and true shops are at any department store/big c/lotus. That's plenty of cash for most of people but perhaps you're a multi billionaire so it might now work....I know it might not be a solution for everyone but 1) this isn't YOUR post and you aren't the one in needed of help. 2) op seems fitting for true money so it might work for him/her. 3) I know you are a special one, I'm done with you, I'll leave u the last word
Dany ********
@Alex ********
did you even read the post?? OP is a DN currently in Bali. So idk where he would get 10k USD to bring into thailand. or even 1 or 2k… this isn’t really helpful so.

as long as you need cash to top up any wallet it is pretty trash. its a funny gimmick to use QR payments but nothing more.

The solution is to have a foreign bank that reimburses you atm fees. Otherwise just eat the fees. 250 baht per 30k transaction isnt too crazy. And transfer big sums like rent via Wise/Revolut/etc. to minimize atm withdrawals.
Kyle **********
@Dany *******
plz let us see your true money account with full access. If you had one you wouldn't talk s**t like this
Dany ********
@Kyle *********
why do you need to see my TM account? as long as you cannot top up with credit card and need cash for it its pretty $hitty.
Kyle **********
@Dany *******
well, cuz there are a lot of bored folks like you who love to talk s**t about something they've never tried. Isn't a bank the same? Besides of getting a loan, don't you need to top up your bank account with cash before using it? I made a post about true money the other week and it's a very useful app for those who live here in thailand, it's so useful that even thais who got their bank account still apply for it. If you live here long term then it's highly recommended.
Dany ********
@Kyle *********
well i live here for 3 years. not have and not need a local account. i also have my TM account for about a year and all features activated through providing my driving license ;) but i very rarely use it because its just not good.

as a local its totaly different as they can connect their bank account to TM. and they get some benefits whatsoever.

the difference with my german bank account is that it tops up with income from my company every month. and i dont pay a fee for that ;) if i want to top up my TM wallet then i need to withdraw cash which would come at 250 baht fee for most people plus whatever exchange rate difference your bank gets. and then i need to drive to a true shop and top up my TM wallet… it just costs money and is inconvinient. and for what? to do a few QR payments each month? not worth the hassle. just add a credit card top up. cannot be hard right? AIS for example has that…
Kyle **********
@Dany *******
you don't get invited at the parties often, do you? You aren't the center of the universe, not everyone can get a bank that offers no fees while being abroad. You don't like to drive to a true store? You don't like that app? We got that but plz now stop hijacking this post.
Alex *********
@Dany *******
do you know how much money has op carried with him/her? is that any of your problems where op gets the money? How do you know what is helpful for op or not? At the end of the day you're not bringing anything to the table, you're just blah blah blah. 1) true money allows you to transfer money digitally 2) you can pay bills online 3) you can get a domestic virtual debit card 4) you can pay your landlord by moving the money onto his/her account and so on. 5) you can pay at any stores and u can scan pay 30 times a month for free, even to private accounts. You can pay on most of local apps (Lazada. Grab, bolt and so on). Regarding your solution: non all the banks offer the reimbursement for the ATM fees, actually they are very few and it'd still cost you $$$ to open and keep a bank account (And the only thing u can do is just to withdrawal, nothing else).
Dany ********
@Alex ********
OP is a DN. So it

would be very beneficial for him and his future to go with a real bank account that is great for beeing abroad and doing transactions abroad. a bank that offers those reimbursements. otherwise its just shortsighted. he will eventually leave thailand again and have the same problem elsewhere.

i am bringing facts to the table. thats all. you need cash to top up. which makes it a terrible system for longterm. add a credit card top up option and it will be good.

what bills do you need to pay online? my rent i can transfer via wise or revolut. same as my utilities. can also pay anything at 7-11. there is a 7 every few hundred meters 😅

why would i want to prepay lazada or shoppee? pay on delivery after checking the items is the way to go…..

Grab, etc. work perfectly fine with any foreign credit card. i just put in my virtual cards to be safe.
