TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses ways to send money to a Thai bank account from the UK without incurring high fees, specifically for visa purposes. The user mentions plans to use TransferWise but finds it expensive for a single transaction and seeks recommendations on other options. Community comments highlight various methods including TransferWise, Western Union, XE, PayPal, and others, comparing their fees and exchange rates. Users suggest that TransferWise generally provides the best rates, particularly for larger amounts, while others provide alternatives such as XE and PayPal, which may be slower but could have lower fees. Overall, the consensus leans towards using TransferWise or checking local bank options like Bangkok Bank for better exchange rates.

Crypto like Bitcoin is the cheapest. Buy Bitcoin in GBP, transfer the Bitcoin to a wallet on a Thai crypto exchange like BitKub.com. Withdraw to a Thai bank at .25% Probably cost you less than lunch and you might even profit if the Bitcoin price goes up. Easy peasy, japaneasy.
Tom *******
That’s the amount you pay when you withdraw to THB from a crypto. It’s the percentage commission.
Tom *******
Read it again. It’s .25% (a quarter) only.

@Tom ******
Hi Tom, what do you mean by 25%?

What do the banks charge for a standing or Eder into a Thai account?
Wilmont ******
@Peter *******
I guess they’re ok of you but doing it monthly amounts to a whole lot where as I make a once a year transfer of $15,000.00 to $18,000.00 for only $25.00.
Steve *******
If you have a Bangkok bank account you can transfer it from your uk bank account to their London branch and then they'll transfer it to Thailand. Fee is a percentage of what you transfer with a max fee of 500bt.

Thank you so much, I just managed to open a account with Bangkok bank so I'm definitely going to check this out. Thank you 🙏🙏 how do you find the exchange rate?

they give you the choice of sending the money from uk to thailand in sterling or baht(ie exchanging it in the uk), send it in sterling it's a better rate in thailand. You'll get whatever the rate is that day.

TransferWise costs me about 1.5%, sending from USA either from USA bank to TransferWise balance, or directly. I had to do 2 transfers to get the ฿800k total
Ivan ************
It's lower than that, I'm seeing 0.66%. You can transfer 800k in one go, the limit is 2m. If you couldn't the limit is your US bank, not TW.

I just used transferwise the once in April, did seem like a ball-ache to me. Competitive. I have a Revolute Card and also a Starling for back up, it’s not been used yet. Resolute gets the business as it worked on first go. It was worryingly easy to use at first, now they updated the app, it’s lost all my banking details, and I need to do a bank transfer each time, it’s instant though. But you pay nothing for cash withdrawals, which I why I use it. So it’s free to add money to it from many sources, I have my main bank account linked, And a few credit cards for back up. When I need some cash I do a bank transfer via the app, takes seconds, then hit the ATM. Still get charged 220 at the ATM though so I try to do the larger 25,000 limit ATMs. There is a paying IN limit of £250 a day, so if you need more or spend a bit. Just stick on £250 everyday. Not sure it can be automated. It works for my situation. But soon my rent will need to go into Thai account, not UK as it does currently, so that’s £1500 a month I need to get over here 😂

Charles Schwab bank refunds all atm fees. Just withdraw thai baht, click yes in the crazy 220 baht fee and they credit the atm fees the end of the month. Zero fees. No currency markup.
Brian **********
Just make sure not to click convert currency, because that's the local atm trying to charge a sometimes 10% conversion fee. Schwab will handle it at the mid market rate in bulk.
Wilmont ******
Ok thanks for the information
Wilmont ******
Will look into it for refund purposes only. Very happy with my Navy Federal Credit Union with transfers to my Thai Bank.
David ****************
@Wilmont *****
Look into USAA also. I use a 1% cash back credit card with them and just pay everything I can on the card. There is no exchange markup so with the +1% it works out to better than spot rate. USAA also has ATM rebates and no markups there as well.
Brian **********
@David ***************
there are better options if your into the cash back game. The points guy keeps pretty good track of what the current best deal is for that.
David ****************
@Brian *********
Better cash back exists but an extra 1% won't help if there is a 3% markup on the exchange rate. Are you saying there is a better card also with no markup? That data isn't on the points guy site and the first couple cards he recommends have the 3% markup.
Brian **********
@Wilmont *****
I don't use them for anything else, but to pull cash from abusive atm's.

thank you everyone for your replies! I do use transfer wise to send money to Thailand, but I should have noted Its a large amount and the fee is pretty hefty, I was hoping there is a way of sending a large amount cheaply, without paying, £££

I will probably have to send it back to UK at some point too making it a double fee 🤔 if only I hadn't already used my free transfer already 😅
Shelley ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
That's expensive no? £167 to transfer some money 😅
Ivan ************
@She****
you need to consider the exchange rate, what TW does is it gives you the midmarket rate and actually itemises the actual fee it is charging you. Most others charge some nominally small "transfer fee" but screw you on the exchange rate, certainly that's what most banks do.

When comparing make sure you compare only on the final amount in THB, whichever is higher. WU historically did REALLY screw people on the exchange rate but I believe may be better now depending on the market, it's possible they could actually do a better rate. But compare the final number in THB, that's the bottom line.
Jaye ********
@Shelley *******
I checked the new TW rate. They charge around .58% conversion rate plus the fix fee of 60bht. So they will take around 167 sterling , for example, on the conversion fee and another 3 on the fixed amount. Based on 30,000 sterling

You can direct deposit or direct transfer to your Thai bank cheaply - price depends on the bank. K bank is recommended. I use my credit unions debit card at the Bangkok bank exchange window for free. Limit is 200,000B per time.
Roy ***********
Transferwise is great, but for large amounts a wire transfer can cost less, even taking into account the lesser exchange rate you usually get
Ivan ************
This is sometimes true for USD, into Bangkok Bank, although even that is not always the case now as TW dropped their USD fees.

It's not true for GBP or almost any other currency- TW fees are lower for GBP while Thai bank fees are much much higher.
Devesh *********
I use InstaRem always. Cheaper and faster than transferwise and WU.

It's about the rate plus the fee. Transferwise give the best rate by far. Usually the advertised mid rate.

$25 doesn't matter. What matters is the exchange rate, that's where the true fee is, and you'll typically pay hundreds of dollars on that for a retirement visa sized sum.

A WEEK!? I use Transferwise and it usually takes a few seconds! Sometimes it's a bit slower, but only about 20 minutes max. I have just transferred £500 and it cost £4.13 in fees and I got 40.79 baht, not at all bad a rate.

I have used XE and they are legit. My experience is less than a week and even then that is based on Canadian money laundering laws that require a 4 day delay. I understand that XE says no fees but you are paying for the service via the exchange rate they give you. This hides the cost from the customer and is a problem for me
Chris *******
@Scott *********
for me I've found the difference fractional and once your account is linked it's simple. Cheaper than my bank for sure.
Scott **********
@Chris ******
Yes for sure cheaper than going direct to a bank wire transfer. I do think they are still using bank wire transfer but I would guess get a much better rate than a single individual and of course you do not need to wait in line at the bank. Have you tried coating to TransferWise? TransferWise has a whole different business plan which effectively creates internation transfers while only actually doing in country transfers this keeping costs lower. It would take me far too long to explain how they do it using my phone but there is info available via web search
