Hey everyone, I'm looking to get a Thai driving license and an having a few problems. I have a valid Washington State license, but the land transport office in Samut Prakan demanded a notarized translation of the different classes and endorsements from the embassy even though none are applicable to me. Is this something anyone else has had to deal with? Does anyone have any advice for how to handle this in a manner that doesn't take forever? Is going to the embassy actually needed and if so how is the process? Thank you very much for any info you can provide.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user seeks guidance on obtaining a Thai driving license using a valid Washington State license, highlighting issues with the Land Transport Office in Samut Prakan requiring notarized translations. Community members share various strategies, including obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) and recount their own experiences in different provinces. Recommendations include approaching different districts for potentially less strict requirements, using agents to ease the process, and emphasizing the need for accurate documentation if the original license is not in English.

If that is what immigration wants do it. Or get a visa agent to do for you. In Pattaya the office accepts driver’s license in English. Only if license is not in English you have to get translated. Be glad you don’t have to get the translation authenticated by your embassy. In Pattaya the embassy will only accept translations from a translation office which they have approved.

I assume you are in thailand already. Maybe you can try approach a driving school that can take a class for a few days then get a licence test on the spot. That's what i did as a thai. Ask them if they can do the same for a foreigner

If you are in the US then try get an IDP before coming to Thailand. We accept both IDP under Geneva and Vienna treaties

That is right, take the test, which is also available in English language. Else you would have to have an International Driving Licence from your home country. But really, the test is the smoothest alternative.

In addition, there are some web sites about the Thai Driving Test, with all information needed.

Just take the test it was so easy and was not expensive.

Try Bangchak

As much as I try to avoid them where possible use a agent so much less hassle

I'm at the point of applying for both motor car and motorcycle licences. A neighbour's wife gave the Land Transport Officer 2,000 baht for each licence. No questions or tests required. Either that or an agent sounds like the best plan.

Explains so much why there are lots of f*ckers on the road. Ppl just pay off to get the licence

you are kinda right but also wrong as you actually need a license from own country. Don’t know about yours but uk pretty stringent

I got my license in Oct. They accepted my US license, but I had to watch the videos for "training".

My husband's license was expired, so he had to do all the testing. Driving and test on computer for both motorbike and car.

Bottom line (in all of Thailand) is that it can totally depend on what officer you get.

Just do the test. It's not that difficult. There used to be a practice test online.

Looks like a LOT of people had a hard time getting a licence. 8am I went to Ubon licence building a couple of months ago with my Thai fiancée. I took my passport, UK driving licence and International Driving Permit, no explanation of any codes. I had a 'medical' (asked 2 questions, Dr ticked a few boxes) passport copied, upstairs to have documents checked. Enter 2nd room, stand in line for traffic light test, stand in another line for reaction test, about 7 minutes total. Passed both, goto another room, have photo taken and pay for licence. Start to finish almost exactly 2 hours. Maybe I was lucky!

cos your documents seemed to be in order, esp when you already have IDP

I don't have an IDP, that's why.

In the United States, each State has their own license codes. For example, in California, I have a class C/M2 license (normal car + motorcycle of any size). For Washington State, it looks like they are called "Endorsements" (?) (Source:

Different provinces in Thailand have different requirements. You may have to go to the US Consulate, sign an affidavit saying that you have a license letting you drive [whatever] from Washington, and then get that translated and approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 🙁

When I applied for a Thai driver's license in Bangkok, I had to provide a translation of my original EU license. I translated it myself and got it certified by my embassy.

the American embassy won't do anything without an appointment, which are very limited and take forever to get usually

Weird. When I obtained my first license (quite a while back, mind you) I had a Canadian license for cars and motorcycles AND was here on a non-Canadian passport where the name differs slightly.

They did not require any of that.

Try getting your license in another district or province.I did that recently because of queue space. It's totally allowed. Maybe you get a more reasonable request for documents.

I just did mine so easy with an international license 🙂
John *******
@Paul ******
the international driving permit was easily accepted by the transport and land office and is the preferred document that they accept
Paul *******
@John ******
There is no "international licence". There are only National Licences. Perhaps you had an International Driving Permit which is of no value by itself and is simply an English translation of a National licence.
John **********
@Paul ******
the IDP makes the issue of a Thai license simple. The Thais know what it is, and just issue the Thai license after doing colour blind and reaction tests
Paul *******
@John *********
I used my Australian National licence at Chiang Mai without having an IDP. The transport authority had no problem with that and I was never asked if I had an IDP. At the same time I understand that many foreigners feel more comfortable if they have the IDP and that some Thai's (especially some police) mistakenly believe that an IDP is required to drive in Thailand.
John **********
@Paul ******
they will often accept a license as long as it's in English and they can understand the endorsements. The IDP removes any argument there may be
John **********
@Paul ******
an IDP is required to drive in Thailand if you don't have a Thai license, and also is only good for 3 months (even though it might be valid for longer). Not having the correct license also invalidates any insurance.
Paul *******
@John *********
Not true. IDP is not required under International conventions if the national licenceis in English.
John **********
@Paul ******
international conventions are meaningless if the nation you're in requires something else...

I'm English, but all I did was get a proof of residence at the local immigration office, then go to test centre, sit through a 10min video, have colour eye test and reaction tests, all in all about 1hr from entering to having both bike and car licenses, same as in England.
Alan *********
Go to the the Land Transport office at Mo Chit .

just make the license new - not use your home country one -

can you take a driving test here ,do you mean?

@Martin ******
the driving test only take like 10 mins..just 3 step and regarding the theory test you can pay driving school to skip it

John ***********
Can't you just get an international driver's license?
Dave **********
@John **********
An international driving license is accepted as long as it is valid but if you are a resident and eligible, you should obtain a Thai Driver's License.

Could be a insurance problem if your living here, not a tourist, and driving without a Thai License.
John ***********
@Dave *********
I'm not sure. I thought that could be an option. Just because you're a resident doesn't mean you're a citizen so in America I had no problem putting my relative from there on my car insurance as a driver with her international license from Thailand. I really don't know how it works there.
Dave **********
@John **********
works here very similar to the US see link below.l. BTW in Florida, most likly other States, since my Wife's Thai License is in English it is accepted for short visits. Bring retired military thus stationed around the world I had to get Licenses for Countries I was stationed/living in form my personal car. Even after retired working on a Saudi US Contract I had to have a Saudi License.

is that something that can be done here at the transport office or the embassy? What's the easiest option? Thanks for the quick reply
Bobby ********
Roger Nozari. You can only get an international permit from the motoring organisation in your own country.

@Bobby *******
since OP is American he can get online from AAA and will be mailed to him in Thailand.

"AAA IDP International Driving Permit"

that's a pretty decent backup plan, but I was hoping for something that takes less than 2 months lol

yeah, don't know why it's so slow. Taking the tests is always an option.
