What do I need to get a Thai driving license at the DLT office in Taling Chan without a Thai companion?

Has anyone been to the DLT office at Taling Chan? I want to get a Thai driving licence (I have an IDP) but I don't have anyone Thai to go with me without inconveniencing them and my Thai wouldn't be anywhere near good enough if nobody there speaks a little bit of English. I live in Pinklao so it would save a lot of hassle instead of going to Chatuchak.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post addresses the process of obtaining a Thai driving license at the DLT office in Taling Chan for expats who do not have a Thai-speaking companion. Key requirements include an International Driving Permit (IDP), proof of residency, a medical certificate, and a valid foreign driver's license. While some commenters suggest that English assistance is available, others recommend visiting the Chatuchak DLT office for a more streamlined experience. Confusion arises around using a work permit as proof of residency, which is accepted at DLT offices in Bangkok, unlike in some other regions. Additional discussion includes procedures for residency certificates for expats with multiple entry visas.

Not sure if this is the correct place to post? I have a 1 year multiple entry visa, how do I get residency from this?

?

If it is not related to this topic; getting a thai drivers license, perhaps open your own topic and ask your question. (y)

So depending on where you live and your type of visa that's what you have to do.

As Tod said: you can go to the immigration office at Chaengwattana and get a certificate of residency from them for 200 baht and they will mail it to you in a couple weeks.

The bangkok immigration office will NOT issue certificates of residence to anyone who doesn't do 90 day reports.

But you are still talking about registering a car? Do the DLT in Chonburi want foreigners residency certificates to get a driving licence if they already have a WP?

Someone was sent away from the DLT here last week trying to renew his licence on a WP. Told to get a residence certificate. I know the yellow housebook is useless here for anything. I've seen reports from other areas that was accepting them now refusing them if they are over a year old.

you're going to be fine using a work permit for proof of residency at ANY Department of Land Transport office in Bangkok to get a driver's license

I don't know about a WP for licences in your area. They just simply want foreigners in Chonburi to have residency certificates. I think they all make it up as they go along to be honest

Not accepting them for registration of vehicles. Same as this yellow book. Chonburi and Pattaya won't accept them anymore.

Are not accepting a WP as proof of residency?

That's fine I guess in Bangkok. Just beware if buying a vehicle some offices are not accepting them.

Yes. You can get one from immigration. Only those not doing 90 day reports can't.

Thanks Tod.. Ya, I have all of the required docs. My IDP will expires on May 1st and I'll be out of the country just after Songkran until the middle of may, but my original licence is still in date so that I can wait until I get back.

Remember if your not doing 90 day reports in Bangkok, you will need to get the proof of residency from your embassy.

as long as you have the requirements (proof of residency, medical certificate, current drivers license from your country, passport) they will speak enough engrish at any of the DLT's in Bangkok to get you thru the process.

BUT

Chatuchak is dialed in as far as getting foreigners thru the process. I'd say it'd be well worth the trip to go there.
