How difficult is it to get a Thai drivers license in Thailand? I see all these ads for agents who help with getting the license but I don’t know if I want/or need to pay an agent.

Fyi, I’ll be renting an apt so I’ll have a lease agreement first day outta ASQ.

And before I return back to US i’ll be getting married there.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Obtaining a Thai driver's license as an expat is generally considered easy, with many recommending against hiring an agent. You will need to prepare necessary documents, including a passport, your home country's driver's license, an International Driving Permit (IDP) when applicable, a medical certificate, and a certificate of residency. Most experiences indicate that the DLT (Department of Land Transport) is user-friendly, with many individuals reporting that they were able to get their licenses after passing simple tests like color vision and reaction tests. It's also advised to bring a Thai speaker for assistance. Walk-ins are generally accepted, but there may be varying wait times based on location and current regulations.

I’m hoping this is not current? I just took a screenshot from the DLT website.

It's old. DLT has been open for months.

I guess it probably depends on how terrible driver you are.
Tom *******
There’s a 2-month wait now at the DLT center in Bangkok so I hope you’re not in any hurry. My appointment is in the middle of April to renew my Thai driving license. You also need a certificate of residency either from your embassy or from the Thai immigration office in Chaeng Wattana.
Garrett ***********
@T**
There is no wait for foreigners. Chatachucak DLT specifically will take you if you show up in the morning when they open.
Tom *******
@Garrett **********
Hmm...so why was I given this appointment when I turned up to my local DLT?
Garrett ***********
@T**
You probably got lucky.
Lizzy ****
@Tom ******
Is that for the driving test? I have my Australian licence and IDP so was hoping to walk in and get it done on the day. I don’t live in Bangkok and will only be there for a few days.
Tom *******
@Lizzy ***
I cant really say if it’s the same for all requirements at the DLT but I’m renewing my Thai license. I was given a date of exactly 2 months for my appointment.
Lizzy ****
@Tom ******
I thought you could walk in off the street and just get it done? There seem to be different answers from different people. Perhaps it depends on the office you go to.
Michael ********
If you are going to use an agent Fatboys are good.

The only thing I can add is from my experience 16 months ago is... if you want residency documents immediately... Immigration charge 500THB for a Residency Certificate for each driving licence. (No receipt given) or you can wait seven days is free.

Medical, height weight, blood pressure, medication questions was 150THB at hospital. Temporary 2 year Car licence 205 THB, Motorcycle Licence 105 THB. (Some other small costs for passport photos and photocopying).

The rules have just changed for Motorbikes...anything over 400cc you have to do some additional training. As stated by others if your entitlement to drive / ride is already on your DL and corroborated by IDP you can apply to that licence here in Thailand subject to the local rules and regulations.

I have a full European "Big bike licence", will have to wait to see what wil happen come renewal time in November this year. There has been nothing from the DLT with regard to us Farang who already holding a big bike licence keeping the entitlement that I am aware of. Hopefully can keep this entitlement or will have to do the additional training.

Oh and the speed limits have just been revised too as well as a points system for driving infractions. All sounds daunting at first but really is not that difficult.🙂

Not a problem if you have your current/ valid licence from English speaking country.

Non Eng. Reqs an Inyernational Driving Permit.

Any clinic/hosp will give you med cert got 80 to 100 baht. Simply eye test, reaction test.

Pleasant people.took 45 min. Renewals are 10 yrs.
Frédéric ******************
In my place, you give the money and a copy of your passport to a motorcycle taxi stationed in front of the transport department building and he comes back 10mn later with the health certificate he got from the hospital next door.

Being your just getting out of quarantine you will have never done a 90 day address report, so you will only be able to get the required address certificate notarized from the embassy at a cost of US$50. Then you need a medical certificate any of the motorbike taxi drivers at the DLT across from Chatuchak can take you to get, at bt180. If your valid US driver's license has a motorcycle endorsement then you will not have to take any driving tests, car or motorcycle, and in Thailand they are two separate licenses. If you do not have a motorcycle endorsement on your license then to get that license you take the written test, and driving test. They have the written test in English, and a book to study in English, then you need just a 70% to pass. For the driving test they have motorbikes you can rent very cheap. You take a few eye tests, color blindness, depth perception, and a reaction time test. Then watch a video and your done.
Robert ********
Easy. You don’t need an agent. Just follow the advise already given by others. I got both bike and car same day.
G*
If you're in Thailand and have your country DLs ready, soon after you have the cert.of residence then go to embassy to have your licenses attested. When it's done, just go to the nearest DLT and fill the form, bring the copy of all docs and you'll only have to go through the vision, brake, and boring tests.
Lizzy ****
Just to clarify, if I have an Australian licence and an IDP (both in English) I don’t need it translated to obtain my Thai licence?
G*
@Lizzy ***
afaik, and based on my experience, no. But since I'm Indonesian and my DLs are in Indonesian, I had to translate it to English
G*
@Lizzy ***
it doesn't matter. For the vision and brake tests you can pass it easily since the test instruments are clearly understandable. And the movie, you only need to watch. But yeah, all in Thai. No worries, I can passed it easily, just boring.
Lizzy ****
@K*
Are the tests available in English, or with English translation?
Elisa *******
@Lizzy ***
In Koh samui the written test was in English.
G*
@Lizzy ***
nope. Even the instructions will be in Thai (as I had experienced before). And the boring test I mentioned above is, you've got to sit for AN HOUR and watch the educational movie about traffic rules and regulations and the consequences if you break it, ALL IN THAI and you have to keep silent, can't ask anything to anyone, no chatting, no texting, no eating, drinking, even yawning. Make sure the surveillance officer sees your eyes stick on the movie. I had been yelled just because I nodded down my head 🙄
Lizzy ****
@K*
So really I won’t be able to do the test on my own then, since my Thai is not good and I can’t read Thai? I guess I will try to find someone who can help me.
Henry *********
@Lizzy ***
In Bangkok, the video has English subtitles, and most of the staff speak English.
G*
@Henry ********
I went to DLT in Bang Khun Thian which is near Rama 2. And they didn't have English subtitles. 😔🙄 Only the male staff at the counter who spoke English to me, others were unable to speak English. The officers when I had conducted the tests also gave me instructions in Thai mix with very little English.
Lizzy ****
@Henry ********
Is there a particular office you could recommend?

Can you walk in or do you have to make an appointment in advance? In Bangkok.
Steve **********

walk in
Garrett ***********
@Li***
Thais need to make an appointment. Foriegners do not as you need a Thai ID card to make an appointment online.
Andy ********
Very easy,
@Gar****
and
@Sc***
have covered the basic details. The only thing I would add is take a Thai speaker with you, if you don't speak Thai.

The medical certificate can be got from most clinics. If you want a car and motorcycle licence you will need two medical certificates.

Definitely no need to employ an agent.
Steve **********
@Andy *******
agree, no agent needed.
Grant ************
@Steve *********
no agent needed but a Thai friend or partner is always a good thing to help with interpreting.
Steve **********

absolutely, if you can, always be accompanied by a thai. No question.
Garrett ***********
@An**
If you do both licenses at the same time, you only need 1 med cert, same as the cert of residency.
Grant ************
@Garrett **********
I had to take in two when I got both. No idea why but was told that I needed two once again in Krabi.
Jim ********
I needed 2 of each aswell mate and did mine both together 👍
Steve **********
Exactly as Garrett said above. For me even easier as I was in Ubon and they didn’t even make me take any test. I provided all the documents he started. Paid 310 baht (I think) and left with motorbike and car license. Took about 20 minutes.

@Steve *********
oh cool, I’ll be doing it from Ubon as well. My gf just got her’s a few months ago and I just wanted it since I plan on getting a car soon.
Scott *********
Found it very easy.

Already had my english car and big bike. So no driving test.

Just colour eyesight test and reaction test.

Short video and done.

Renewed it now to the 5 year also very easy.
Garrett ***********
Very simple. If you haven't left your home country yet, get an IDP (they're $20). Take your passport, home countries DL, IDP, medical certificate (100-200 baht at any clinic) and certificate of residency (get at immigration or from your embassy) to the DLT.

The DLT is very friendly and easy to deal with, much more so than immigration. You'll fill out an application, take a vision test, and get your DL. It takes about 1-2 hours and cost 215 baht for both car and motorbike.
Garrett ***********
David The law says no, but it practice you need. When I got my license from chatchuchak they wanted an IDP. Without an IDP you had to watch the 1 hour movie. With it, you didn't.
Paul *********
@Garrett **********
I just got both car and motorbike Thai licenses and had to do exactly what you mentioned. No driving test required as I had a uk licence and idp
Garrett ***********
@Pa**
Glad to hear man. Did you have to make an appointment or did they take you without?
Paul *********
@Garrett **********
they were very busy so had to do it in 2 visits. 1st to verify all docs were ok (just walked in) then 2nd visit ( made an appointment) was for the 1 hour video and eye test, received the licences 1 hour later

In America, it is called the International Drivers PERMIT. You can get it from your local AAA (American Automobile Association), for cheap. Photograph required. Valid for one full year BUT only for three months from entry into the Kingdom.

I am a widow. First time ever traveling and this was super easy. Easiest part of my move over!

Spent a year in Thailand. Never bothered with the Thai license after all, but had the IDP just in case...and took classes at Honda Motorcycle Safety for knowledge and experience.
Grant ************
@Garrett **********
not quite true. If you get your international driver’s license before you leave your home country it needs to state that you have both car and motorcycle licenses to get both here in Thailand otherwise you’ll only be allowed the one that you have in your home country.
Arron *********
@Grant ***********
4 years ago they still gave me both even though I didn't have a motorbike licence in UK.
Grant ************
@Arron ********
sometimes this happens and they’re not supposed to. You were just lucky 😂 I suppose.
Garrett ***********
@Grant **
First of all, there's no such thing as an international drivers license. 2nd, I didn't say an IDP would magically grant you license you didn't already have.
Ekkehard *******
@Garrett **********
The translation of the national drivers license is called International Drivers License. You get it at the Vehicle Registration Office (bringing your passport photo). In Germany.
Garrett ***********
@Ekke****
Permit, not license. A license is a permission to do something that is otherwise prohibited by law. A government or private company cannot give anyone permission to do anything in another country.

It's important to make the distinction because there are TONS of illegitimate companies on the internet or in Pattaya that will gladly give you an international drivers license. I see people on Facebook all the time claiming they have a "lifetime IDL or a Lifetime Thai Drivers license" they bought from somewhere.

They are not real.
Andrew *********
@Garrett **********
I have an international driving licence issued by the UK Post Office.You produce your licence and 2 photographs and it is valid for one year, though you are only allowed for 90 days from entry.
Garrett ***********
@And***
No you don't.
David *******
@Garrett **********
Andrew is correct international driving permit valid 1 yr but valid first 3 month in Thailand
Frédéric ******************
@David ******
In some countries like France, the international permit is valid 3 years.

no need to get your knickers in a knot. There is an international drivers license Australians can purchase from the post office in Australia.

Secondly the way you wrote your comment it comes off as you did.
