TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a Thai driver's license with a foreign license and International Driving Permit (IDP), you need to visit a local Department of Land Transport (DLT) office. Required documents include a residence certificate, a medical certificate (from any clinic), and your foreign driver's license. A simple reaction test and potentially an online training may also be necessary, depending on your province. You can convert your German license to a Thai license without an agent, and the process is considered straightforward. It's important to note that while an IDP is valid for 90 days, after this period you need a local license to drive legally.

Just out of curiosity, what is the benefit of having a Thai drivers license? I have a U.S. license along with an International Driving Permit and have never had a problem. Thanks

You’re good for 90 days at a time then.

legally you can only use IDP in a foreign country for 90 days before you must either stop driving or get a local license. Police may not care but if there's an accident, the insurance surely will care.

You can also use it to check into hotels and to fly domestically instead of your passport.

In the long run and if you are staying in Thailand for a longer period of time, it may be appropriate. Let's take a look

Only after 90 days do you need a Thai driver’s license.

You need a residence certificate from your immigration office and a note from a doctor to say you are fit to drive (1 to 200 baht). Make an appointment at DLT and do the simple reaction tests. It is very easy. You might need to do the 1 hour online training first, depends on which province you live in. No need for an agent it is very easy if you have the international driving permit. Good luck.

Go to your local DLT office with a residence certificate and a medical certificate from any clinic and ask them to convert to a Thai licence. Some offices will require you are on a non immigrant visa
