Hi there. Today I went to apply for a Thai Driving Licence with my partner in a town near our village in Petchabun. I have been using an Irish licence for a few weeks but wanted to get legal.

I was told I would have to go to the Irish embassy in Bangkok and get it translated into Thai and also get a letter saying it is a real licence.

I have never heard of anyone else wanting a Thai Licence from a Home Licence needing it all translated.

What are your experiences please?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking information about the requirements to convert an Irish driving license into a Thai driving license. They mention being advised to get their license translated and authenticated at the Irish embassy in Bangkok. Other users confirm the need for translation when the license isn't in English, sharing their own experiences and processes they followed, which often involved obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP). Discussions include the necessary documents for applying for a Thai license, with some mentioning the flexibility of using agents to simplify the process.

Never come without a international license then its very easy to transfer first to a Thai 2 year license.

Hi Nigel, Its because an Irish driving licence is a bilingual/ dual language licence. There is English already. Theyve just not noticed it ,and they did notice the Irish on it, so automatically think it needs to be translated. It doesnt.

I had the same issue years ago, but when they understood it was accepted. I've pmd you a longer more detailed answer with some ideas about what to do 👍

I did for two international driver licences- in English, there was never any requirement to translate any document. A Thai driver licence card has two languages ( Thai and English). You may be do it in other places that make it easy. Go online and read about the rules - I found each office slightly different.
Leo ******
Use these guys... Ive been using them for 15 years now and never had an issue. The IDP is legit and lasts 3 years. They send it to you for 60 quid.

Done my driving license car and bike in Buriram City. English driving license no problem in and out 2 hours. Look on the internet you can get it without leaving your house

What's about international driving license ?
David ***********
I just handed over my British license they looked at it and gave me it back okay done the traffic 🚦 test pick up my Thai license all in about 30 minutes mind that was about 8 years ago now in Kalasin
เฟร็ด **********
would it be easier just to have a driving test rather than go through all that BS paperwork, check out the way Thai people drive, the test couldn't be that hard
Julie **********
@เฟร็ด *********
if you do have the correct paperwork,go that way. Believe me, it's not easy to pass the practical and the theory is really tricky. The English used is often difficult to understand and you must get 45 out of 50 questions correct. Take it from me - if you have the correct paperwork,do it that way. Plus you still need to have the medical certificate and letter from immigration for every outcome. It really was difficult. And I've been driving for over 40 years. My husband stood in a queue for 20 minutes and got both licences almost immediately (10 mins processing time)
Julie **********
Plus it's not the actual test itself, the practical test. That only takes a few minutes. It's the theory. You can practise for it by going online, but there's around 600 questions they might ask you. You need to get

on the day to pass.

There is an hour online video and test requirement . Google

DLT elearning.

I used my Aussie license..... they were confused but I showed them the government website explaining our licenses and then they accepted it.

Just use a agent they will get one for you

An IDP is recognized in 150 countries. It's another way of saying you have a valid driver's license. Without one, I suppose they need that translation

Thanks very much to you all. I am turning off notifications now.

If you are here for longer than 3 months, your IDP becomes invalid. You therefore have to apply for a Thai licence. My husband did so, last week. He had his IDP and UK licence with him, plus passport. He now has 2 separate Thai driving licences,one for motorbikes and one for a car. On the other hand, although I had my IDP with me ( you also need a medical, which is cheap and easy to get), because I had my UK licence stolen on 01.01.24, despite having a report from the Thai police giving this information, I had to do a full day's training followed by a practical and theory test on the following day. I got my Thai licence yesterday, after passing both.
Julie **********
We had to take proof of residency (TM30) to immigration plus copies of our passport and visa page. You can get it all done there,but it just saves time going with your own copies.

your husband didn't need to take any test? What documents he provided? Which office did he go to?
Julie **********
@Ashmeed ********
Pranburi. We had to a form with photo on at immigration in HH ( not Bluport) plus the medical (100 baht). He then took both forms plus his passport,IDP and UK licence and was issued with both licences within half an hour. ( He got the 2 forms from immigration - one for car and one for motorbike) and a photo for each. I think we had to go back for these forms 2 days later. It really was a simple process for him.
Julie **********
He didn't need to take any test at all.
Peter ********
Stop messing around. Go to an agent. It will cost you virtually nothing. They will take you to the office and get it all done. If you go to court and take a lawyer with you. Anyone who doesn’t is a fool and has time to waste. Same same here.
Shane *********
It's easier to just get a Thai license
Marcel *******
And the first is only valid for 2 years

As said mate just go to the licence plc near your home and you might be lucky and with a wee dip into you Irish pocket you.mihht not have to sit the test. T.I.T.

They want an IDP - which most people don’t realize until they are here

firstly some offices ask for your English license translated and some don't. Secondly yes you should have gotten an IDP as its much easier.

Finally if you were picked up you would have been fined with driving here without a valid licence. They have tightened the rules here

Can I get a licence in Bkk or does it have to be the province where my TM30 has me registered?
Phil ******
@Nigel *************
yes sure we have a DLT here but make sure they want the same documents as your province wants. TM 30. The hotel you book into can give you a TM30 receipt too.

great. My Aussie embassy doesn't do translations just notorises the copy of the license. I think your embassy will do the same
Putt ********************
If you have Non-O or any long term visa type in Thailand, you can apply for a Thai Driving License. Check DLT website for required documents.

My husband use his Indian license to apply for a Thai license a year ago. He didn't need to do any test except the physical exam and listen to some training video.

@Putt *******************
thanks I will have a Non O visa when I come back in November and will get an IDP as well.
Declan **********
Even with an IDP, some offices want a translated copy of your licence certified by your embassy. Without an IDP, most offices want a translated copy of your licence certified by your embassy. However, I have heard that some people have circumnavigated this by using an agent. As always, though, your mileage may vary. Failing all that you can always take the "tests"

Not having an IDP is an issue in some offices. You will also need a residence certificate and a medical certificate. Some offices also require you are on a long term visa

@Tony ******
an IDP is an official document you get from your home country containing the details of your driving licence that allows you to drive in Thailand

Process for french: get a copy of your national license certified (true copy) by your embassy, get it translated by a certified translation service and then get this certified by your embassy again, it worked for me without any agent or tea money

officially you dont need an IDP or translation as your license is already in English. However some local DLT's do seem to insist on the IDP as its easier to work with and is an international standard
Jj ****

translated to Thai. English has no value here, esp in small DLT office

an agent can probably fix this at a big cost

Yep, had to have my German license translated into Thai at the German Embassy and then have the translation authenticated before I could get my Thai license. Normal process.
Wolfgang *******
@Pete ******
Same here. You can also use a translator who is certified from the German government
Pete *******
@Wolfgang ******
that’s exactly what I did and got it from the German consulate in Pattaya.
John *****
If your lic is not in English, then they wld want it translated since it is not IDP
John *****
I converted from a lic in english before, do not need. Maybe the rules hv changed. TiT, maybe try go ask another counter on another day.
Jj ****
@John ****
a national license, in English or not, is not an IDP

it is in English.

i had to translate my DL( dutch) into....english.... and send by mail to embassy for stamp..than do the test

Do the test
Brandon ************
Normally you need an IDP to "convert" from your home license to a Thai license. I guess they are giving you an alternative option to do a conversion since you don't have an IDP. It's either that or start from scratch and do the test and driving test etc.
Peter ********
@Brandon ***********
since when? There is so much nonsense on this forum.
Brandon ************
@Peter *******
no clue. But that's how it's been reported on here since I've been around for 3 years
Peter ********
Wasn’t required for me. Of course this is a typical problem. Nothing is standard!
Peter *******
@Brandon ***********
just do the test and solve the problem you will be okay
Nongnuch ********
@Peter ******
well, you can apply for the Thai license from the scratch. Do the test and all. However it is much easier to just convert your national and international license. You will need to do a colour test, a brake reaction test, and some DLT's require you to watch a traffic awareness video.
Jeffrey **********
@Brandon ***********
never heard of needing a I'd to get a thai license
Brandon ************
@Jeffrey *********
you don't need an IDP to get a Thai license. You need an IDP if you want to skip most of the requirements.
Jeffrey **********
@Brandon ***********
So what part do you skip? I showed them my old license, handed my residency certificate, did a quick eye color chart, they took my photo I paid a fee and was out of there in 10 minutes
