I Need DTV Help. Few questions PLEASE 🙏🏻 (26Y Male from Australia)

It’s my first time in Thailand from Australia. I have already been blessed to have the 60 day visa on arrival and extended this to 90 days expiring July 19th.

My original plan was to fly to Vietnam over the next few days to apply for DTV. However I’m running into a few unforeseen issues.

1. My passport 6 month expiry date is in January of 2027 so I can only apply within the next few days to make the cut.

2. I have 2 primary bank accounts. My primary bank account for majority of the last 3 months had well above 500k baht. However over the last month has dipped to around 300k baht for a short time. It had over 500k but through one big transaction dipped but has recently been topped back up to around 500k baht. With my other account included would put me well over 500k baht again. Claude is saying this would be quite a big issue to get approved for. This is my main concern.

3. I have also had a few issues trying to apply for Vietnam visa based on passport photo. So now I’m asking where is the best place to apply for DTV from. Hanoi being my original place of choice but now it seems Laos is what’s being recommended and Laos seem to have a stricter pull on 3 month rolling 500k balance.

It’s being suggested to me since this is my first time here that I go to Laos apply for an actual tourist visa for 60 days and extend this to 90 again. And during this time keep a stable 500k baht to reapply for DTV in 3 months time. My other option is also to potentially ask my Muay Thai gym program which I paid the DTV fee to if it’s possible to transition to an ED visa and just remain here.

I have already signed a 12 month lease for condo and purchased 2 bikes here in my name.

Any help would be appreciated ☺️
Answer summary
The user is an Australian expat in Thailand with a 90-day extension on their tourist visa and is seeking guidance on applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV). Key concerns include passport expiration, fluctuating bank account balances related to the financial requirement for the DTV, and options for visa application locations (Vietnam vs. Laos). Community suggestions emphasize the importance of renewing the passport, maintaining a stable bank balance above 500k baht for three months, and possibly applying for an ED visa or extending the tourist visa instead of rushing the DTV application at this time.

Return to Australia sort you passport you will get a new passport with a new number get it for 10 years . Then apply to Thai embassy in Australia for the DTV with your new passport. By this time your savings account should be the equivalent of 500k thai baht 3 months. You know you can use your Aussie bank right and it must be a savings account not investment account. Australia Thai embassy has been very helpful for DTV applicants. Then you're all set.

OP
Thank you for all the help guys so quickly as well really appreciate the support ❤️ seems as though passport renewal is a major priority so returning to Australia and fast tracking this might be the best other option

1. Renew your Australian passport

2. Don't confuse things and have ฿500,000 in 1 account

3. Passport photo will be updated with new pp so photo is irrelevant. Why not go back to Oz?

Both countries have 3-month funds seasoning

1) Even if you apply for the DTV before your passport gets below 6 months, you won't be allowed to enter Thailand because you need 6 months validity no matter what visa or visa exemption you try to enter on.

2) They are going to look at your ending balance each month. If you got back up to 500k by the time your monthly statement was created, and can show that consistently across three months, you should be ok.

3) Again, get a new passport and then pick where to apply. Vietnam seems to be a bit of a crap shoot these days so maybe Laos is the best.

Finally) Why in the hell would you sign a condo lease and buy bikes before you know you've got your visa locked down?!?!?!? The DTV isnt a guaranteed thing. Many people who it seemed should have no problem have gotten rejected. Good luck.

As one Aussie to another if you don’t want to go home I get it, I left in 2011, but find somewhere better 😉

Based on what you've shared, I'd lean toward not rushing the DTV application. The financial requirement is one of the areas consulates scrutinize most, and if your balance dipped below the threshold recently, there's a chance it could complicate the application depending on where you apply.

If you're still eligible, getting another 60-day tourist visa and extending it to 90 days while maintaining a consistent balance may put you in a stronger position. Since you've already committed to a 12-month lease and your bikes, it's probably worth taking the approach with the highest likelihood of approval rather than risking a DTV refusal.

I'd also speak directly with your Muay Thai gym to see if an ED visa is genuinely an option—they'll know what's possible with their program. Whatever you choose, rely on the specific requirements of the Thai embassy or consulate where you'll apply rather than AI advice alone. Good luck!

You can use multiple accounts as long as they are in your personal name and liquid funds.

I’m American and applied in DC with two US Bank Accounts and one Australian account.

You will be fine.

Get a new passport.

Stay on tourist visa’s until you have the 500K seasoned again.

Then apply when you are in a strong posting.

You need to get a new passport. Everything else you asked is irrelevant until you've done that.

You can't enter Thailand on a visa exemption if you have less than 6 months left on your passport. So start with the first step and then go from there.

I would stay on tourist visas and keep your bank balance above 500k baht. In the meantime, get a new passport and apply in a few months on the new passport. I applied for my DTV in Hanoi and it was approved in a few days. You have time. No need to rush.
