HEADS UP ON PENANG THAI CONSULATE
As I just came back from Penang after doing my SETV, I just would like to confirm they are getting really more strict on giving them.
Now you have to absolutely show those documents :
1. Bank statement (better one from your own country as a Thai bank would be suspicious if asking for a Tourist visa)
2. Flight onward ticket (again better if back to your own country to avoid question)
3. Hotel booking (not necessary for the whole stay as mine was for only 2 nights in Thailand but again, better if can make it for the whole stay, even more than one in different locations to prove you are traveling)
4. Have to show up in person at the consulate now
I got my SETV after so many questions from the officer and checking strong on my earlier overall stamps over my passport. Have to be ready to answer any questions straight in order to not seem suspicious.
One guy just before me was denied an SETV after a Non-B visa, just to know.
In order to avoid airport immigration, I usually take a minivan straight to Sadao boarder and take a flight from Hat Yai to avoid airport immigration and more troubles.
This time, the Sadao boarder was totally empty and we made it very smoothly as the driver from the agency manage it with the immigration to avoid any trouble. Be ready to show THB 20,000 in cash in case they ask but they didn't ask us this time.
Hope this will help anyone going to Penang for visa purpose.
TLDR : Answer Summary
The Thai Consulate in Penang has become stricter in issuing Single Entry Tourist Visas (SETV). Applicants must now provide a bank statement, an onward flight ticket, and hotel bookings (preferably covering the entire stay). Personal appearance at the consulate is mandatory. Being prepared to answer detailed questions about past visa stamps is important, and applicants may encounter cases where visas are denied. Travelers often use alternatives like entering through land borders to avoid complications at airports.
