What are the rules regarding the extension of an ED visa in Thailand?

I'm currently on a 1 year ED visa, and I was just about to go and get my last 3 months extension. Upon checking with my visa agent today, I was informed that I would not get the 3 months extension, but rather an extension up to the date of my previous entry. I have entered the country early December last year so in other words, they are saying I would only get a few days for this last extension, not the 3 months I was hoping for. Can anybody please advise on this? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing an issue regarding the extension of their 1-year ED visa, where their visa agent indicated that they would only receive a short extension until the original entry date, rather than the full 3 months expected. This has prompted community members to discuss the rules surrounding ED visas, particularly around the counting of the visa validity period based on entry dates versus visa approval dates.

When your visa was approved regardless of ur entry date to the country. The first ED stamp by immigration? Usually, that date should be the counting date for 1 year.

no, they are counting 1 year from the date of entry in the country. I have just double checked with the school. Seems incorrect. Basically I've paid for a 1 year contract, and got 9 months

You entered to country with Tourist visa or visa exemption, right? Basically they should only count from the ED visa stamp date.

are you really studying or u just got the ed visa for staying in thailand long term?

Why don’t you check with your school ?

Some immigration offices only allow you to use an ED visa that's not from a university to stay in the country for 1 year maximum.

Thank you for your reply. Do you happen to know where are they accepting beyond the 1 year for ED visa? I'm currently in Huahin, so the rule here is obvious

Has your course finished? Surely your school can provide the required proof that you need to further extend?

The course is not finished, but the IM will not accept past the 1year mark since entering the country

I don't know the updates policies as I haven't had an ED since 2021
