TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice regarding their Education visa (ED visa) which has been approved until March 2018. They learned that immigration policies won't allow for extensions beyond one year for the ED visa. Comments clarify that this regulation has been in place since August 2014 and suggest that individuals typically receive an initial 90-day ED visa that cannot be extended past one year at private institutions. Options beyond the ED visa or changing schools might be needed.

I signed up December 2016...

they told us the extra 6 months was because we signed up before Jan 2017. Anyone else who signed up after that date was only eligible for a year. It’s a shame they are limiting this as genuine students like me will suffer.

Martin Peters I’m at the same situation - however they say I cannot extend for next 6 months... unless signed up for a different language

Martin, i sooo hope as well, it does not look promising at the moment. The perception that ed visa allows those who might not have good intentions nor studying Thai

Tod, i-see, this why I’m trying to understand those interpretations and what other options

yes, but the visa was the sweetener to making long term stay easy. I may look into the multi entry tourist visa for next year. Thanks for your help.

, you can still enroll in a school and study thai if you want to, you just can't pull an ED visa and extensions for doing it is all. You'd need to be on a different visa type to stay here.

bummer. I was really enjoying it. Hopefully by next year they will change their minds!

Unfortunately, you maxed out on the amount of time you can study thai on an ED visa. That's the way the rules are being interpreted now.

Tod Daniels I just finished a 1 year Thai language course and the school now says that I can only get another 6 months worth of ED visa and after that I wouldn’t be eligible for any more ED visa for Thai language, but could possibly apply for another language. I’m keen to continue learning Thai and don’t want to learn another language. Do you know the official stance on what’s going on as this seems very strange and I believe that it may be to do with so many Thai students scamming the system and not going to class. This is in Samui / phangan area and is apparently what Samui immigration is saying and may not be official policy. Thanks for any insight. ( I’m actually leaving the country till may and hoped to return again for another year of study.)

The school gives you new paperwork from them and the Ministry of Education and you go back out of the country to a thai consulate and buy another 90 day single entry ED visa.

If you're studying at a private school the Ministry of Education didn't approve your stay until March of 2018 although you might have signed up for classes at the school that long..

They approved you initially to get an ED visa from a thai consulate and then they approve you to get extensions at the immigration office every 90 days.

No one attending a private school is getting their initial 90 day ED visa extended past the 1 year mark. That's been an immigration policy since the 29th of August 2014. Now people are only getting 8 months out of their ED visa and then being sent out of the country to get a new 90 day ED visa and then getting 7 months of extensions on that.

People tell many things, even that you can not drink beer. Question is what did Immigration and your school told you?
