I just applied for an ED visa, I was told it is possible to extend the 90 days at immigration in Bangkok. Last time immigration officials told me to exit the country and apply for a new visa as there was just a new head of immigration and everything became stricter.

I will be coming for an internship for an one year period, the multiple entry was not an option according to the local embassy. Anyone knows whats the latest news about extending ED visa based on internship?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user applied for an ED visa and is seeking information on extending it for their internship. They mentioned being told that they can extend their visa for 90 days at immigration in Bangkok, but previously faced strict rules due to a new head of immigration. Comments from the community suggest that extensions may be possible with documentation from the internship provider, but typically a 90-day extension is expected, with some having reported year-long extensions depending on the circumstances.

I do have a ED visa multiple entry, and to be honest, just not make any sense.. But my experience with ED visa, is... U can get year, but ever 90 days u have to go to immigration, just to prove that u still learning thai. After 1 year, u have yo get out of the country, and apply again for more 1 year

Nice to have the option but it's substantially quicker to go to immigration in Chiang Mai, it's about a 12 hour round trip (4h40 each way plus the bit in the middle) to the nearest border. I'd pay 1,900 to Promenada in preference to getting the bus all the way to Mae Sai (which costs at least 1,000 including the Myanmar pass anyway).

Good thing is your Visa is good until June 2018 so whenever your 90 days is up you don't need to go to the immigration office you can just go to the border and get a new 90-day stamp as long as it's before the enter before date on that visa

What a sad thing, on that Visa all you needed to do when your 90-day stamp was running out was go to the border, stamp out of Thailand, stamp in and out of another country and stamp right back into Thailand to get another 90 day stamp.

You never had to go to the immigration office ever.

You're not paying 1900 Baht every 90 days for your extension are you?

It's terrible to get rigth informations, when I apply for it at the embassy in Rio, the said to me that was 1 year visa, but here my Thai school said that was that doesn't make any difference, and even in the imigration they told me the same thing!

I'm going ever 90 days to the imigration since I arrive here! I'm in Chiang Mai

@Ed***
, do you have a visa like this?

A one year, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type ED visa?

IF you have a year-long, multi-entry ED visa (one that you can ONLY get at a thai consulate in another country) you would never need to go to the immigration office to extend it OR to file a 90 day report because that type of visa only lets you in the country 90 days at a time.

Plus you can get 15 months of stay out of that visa by border-bouncing every 90 days.

Depending on how long your internship is, what most likely will happen is; you will get paperwork from the place you're interning at and take that to the immigration office to get a 90 day extension

OR

if the place you're interning at can't supply all the documentation to get an extension inside the country they would give you paperwork to go to a thai consulate in the area and get a new 90 day single entry ED visa.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific but those are the two ways it would work. I have seen some people on ED visas get year long extensions based on the documentation the place they intern at, but mostly I see 90 day extensions..

Ahh yeah, previously I had to exit Thailand and apply in Laos or somewhere else for a new ED visa. Thanks for the quick response anyway!
