Hi, me and my partner just moved to Chiang Mai last week, wanna stay long term here. I'm a chinese citizen holding a 2 month tourist visa in thailand, looking for some advice or similar experience you had or heard of.

I would like to change my visa to a long term visa type when next time apply, as far as i know, studying a Thai language lesson to get ED visa is the most legit choice.

So any recommendation of school or institute to choose, which can balance between valuable thai lessons and flexibility of time?

I'm also looking into studying other skills like self-defense classes, but it can be difficult for chinese citizen to get a visa, since some schools can't promise the visa application can be smoothy for chinese citizens.

Do you know any chinese friend that got this type of ED visa? and how much you know about the process and difficulties?

I want to change my visa type when i run out 2 month on early November, and the only option for me is to go back to China and apply again, the last choice is i apply another tourist visa to come back, but since it is a bit different from many western citizens doing visa run, I'm not sure whether if i can get another tourist visa right way or will i get rejected?

Also any advice could be helpful and welcomed! Thank you so much!๐Ÿ˜€

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Chinese citizen currently on a 2-month tourist visa in Thailand seeks advice on transitioning to a long-term ED visa by studying Thai language or self-defense. They inquire about suitable schools for Thai lessons, difficulties faced by Chinese citizens regarding visa approvals, and the process of changing their visa type before their tourist visa expires. It's noted that a tourist visa cannot be changed while in Thailand and that the most straightforward route in such cases often involves going back to China to apply for a new visa. Suggestions include enrolling in a school and obtaining the necessary paperwork to apply for a Non-ED visa at a Thai consulate abroad.

You will NOT be able to "change" your 60 day tourist visa stamp into any other visa inside of thailand. You WILL be able to get a 30 day extension on it at the immigration office for 1900baht.

For the ED visa based on studying or self defense you would enroll in a school, get the paperwork, go to a thai consulate in another country (usually chinese go back to china to get their visas) then get a 90 day single entry Non-ED visa. When you come into the country you'd get stamped in for 90 days and then when that is running down you'd take paperwork from the school to the immigration office to get a 90 day extension. You'd do that for the whole year.

that is ONLY if you enroll in a real university course for a degree NOT if you enroll in their language course for a year.

and i heard that Chiangmai uni can provide a program that i only need to do the paper work once, and get a 12 months visa, no need to go to immigration office every 3 month, is that true ?

thanks for the fast answer! I probably won't extend my visa for another 30 days, because it can be risky for me to apply another tourist visa in china as the last option.
