Thanks Tod Daniels, I thought this group was more appropriate for this question than Bangkok Expats. I have forgotten to transfer the 400K required to do 1 year the visa extension of my type O (by about 3 weeks) so I guess I am unable to actually do that this year. I think I will have to go to an embassy/consulate in a neighbouring country and get a new visa and extend that after returning. I would rather not go to Laos. I would like to go to Kuala Lumpur. The conflicting stories and info on the KL embassy is confusing. So I would like to know the following things... 1. Can I definitely get the type O based on marriage and/or dependents in KL? 2. The following I have seen from the thaiembassy site as the documents required...

2. Dependent Visa (Dependent of spouse or parent possessing Thai nationality)

1. Visa application form duly filled out.

2. Applicant passport valid not less than 6 months. The validity of 18 months is

required for one-year visa application.

3. Copy of passport.

4. (4x6cm.) Photograph(s) of the applicant, taken within the past 6 months.

5. Original and copy of official marriage certificate (For spouse).

6. Original and copy of official birth certificate (For children).

7. Copy of Thai identity card (of spouse or parent).

8. Copy of Thai House registration (of spouse or parent).

9. Bank Statement with a minimum deposit of 100,000 Bath

Is that correct?

I have also seen 400,000. What bank does that have to be in?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking clarification on the process and requirements for obtaining a Type O visa based on marriage at the Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur (KL). They mentioned having missed the financial requirement for extending their current visa and are exploring options to obtain a new visa. Users in the comments discuss various considerations, such as the differing financial requirements for dependents versus marriage, recommendations for other locations (like Penang and Savannakhet), and alternative options like a 60-day extension based on family visits.

you don't need to put money in the bank 3 months prior etc etc. get an affidavit from your consulate attesting that you have min. ฿400k income last year. usually 2 weeks or less by post, some consulates offer same-day.

Thanks all, especially to
@Tod ********
. To sum up...

1. It seems KL is definitely not an option right now (unless that 6 months they state is 'statement validity within 6 months', which is unlikely).

2. Penang is maybe a possibility but I am unsure of the required financials.

3. SVK is a good albeit boring option for a multi entry (or single) non-o marriage based visa with no money in Thai bank required.

4. I also have the option to extend my current year extension for 60 days to allow money to 'season' for 3 months if I bring it over now and do a extension based on marriage

5. However, the 'seasoning' is not actually required for a dependent visa (but was for 2 months for me last year). And if no seasoning required then I could just give the extension a go as normal with the 400k brought over near the time.

At least I have some options :)

ok thanks, sorry my electric cut out, think it may have posted things many times

@Ted ******
, all you'd be doing is getting a 60 day visit family extension of stay and then when your money is seasoned the requisite time applying for a yearly extension of stay based on marriage instead of having dependents here.

All you're doing is changing the reason for your extension you should be fine. Remember extensions of stays based on marriage go under consideration for 30 days before you go back to the immigration office and get the year stamped in.

@Tod ********
I can change and do this next extension based on marriage rather than dependents though without leaving? They kept telling me to get married as apparently that was much easier to process. Assuming I get the family extension first so i can season the money for 2 months
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
ok didn't know that, thanks
Tod *********
for extensions of stays based on marriage the money needs to be seasoned for 2 months
Lance *******
Tod can he get a stat dec from his embassy for income of 40k per month?
Tod *********
He could but as he referenced the pound being down it'd all have to be done thru the UK consulate here in Bangkok by mail

very interesting, just so i am clear I am on a single entry type o that i have extended into the 1 year twice. I can still extend that?
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Last time they were very much on my case about money. I had to show 2 months and report for a meeting to prove I wasn't doing anything 'dodgy'
Tod *********
Getting an extension of stay based on raising children here doesn't require the money be seasoned AT ALL it just requires the 400K baht in the bank.
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yes I do have a similar stamp to that but my current extension was done on dependents as we only got married recently
Tod *********
You probably have a stamp similar to this in your passport, if it doesn't have the "thai wife" stamp in english it usually has ภรรยาไทย written on it ;)
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
that seems like a very real possibility
Tod *********
Believe it or not you're NOT on any visa at all :O

Your original O visa expired a LONG TIME ago ;)

What you're on is yearly extensions of stays based on marriage. Look in your passport it says "extension of stay".

You can certainly apply for the 60 day visit family extension, then when that's running out apply for the yearly extension like normal because your money would be seasoned
Tod *********
You know what else you could do?

You could apply for a 60 day "visit family" extension of stay based on marriage to a thai at the immigration office for 1900baht, and you don't show any proof of financials for that either.

That would buy you enough time so that your 400K baht would be seasoned enough and you could apply for your yearly extension of stay after that.
Tod *********
I googled around and I didn't see ANY recent posts of people getting a 90 day single entry Non-O based on marriage to a thai at the consulate in Kuala Lumpur :(

If you're not wanting to go to Savannakhet your next best choice would be Penang ;)

Thanks :)

Philip Perry what's the advantage of that? don't I need a job?
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Thanks again Tod Daniels. OK and that requires no money to be shown in Savannakhet? It would mean I have to leave the country every 90 days, which is no great issue to me as I have nothing to do anyway. I can send the money if required but I would rather not now that I missed it anyway with the pound being in the toilet. Just keen to know what all the options are.
Tod *********
Philip Perry you can't get the year-long, multi-entry Non-O based on being over 50 (retirement) from Vientiane OR Savannakhet. They only issue a 90 day single entry for that. The year long ones are ONLY at Savannakhet and ONLY for being married to a thai.
Tod *********
@Ted ******
you need to realize that the year-long, multi-entry Non-O based on marriage to a thai requires you to exit/re-enter the country every 90 days during the course of the year because that visa ONLY gets you stamped in for 90 days at a time
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Philip Perry thanks, it is all very confusing. I didn't know there was a ME for 1 year. So I assume that means I don't have to be over 50
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Looking like I may just have to go to Savannakhet. The multi entry there what is required for that? Don't I have to be over 50 for that?
Ted *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
hmmm OK, I did find it hard to get much info on this myself.. do you know what the financial requirements are in Penang?
Tod *********
While it doesn't specifically say "marriage" the Thai consulate in KL lists the Non-O as needing 6 months of a bank statement with 400K baht

I think that one listing the money 100K is outdated, because it's from 2012..
Ted *******

Thanks again, I saw that as well but I wasn't sure whether that meant it had to be in there for 6 months or just some point in the last 6 months :)

Thanks Tod Daniels, I used to go Laos quite a lot and I am just not a fan of the place so if I can avoid it I will. I can show the money if necessary but I only have till 6th September to leave. So can't put money in a Thai bank for any real length of time
Tod *********
what is the reason you don't wanna go to the thai consulate in Savannakhet Lao and get either a year-long, multi-entry or a 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Type O visa based on marriage to a thai without the need to show any money in the bank?
Adam ***********
Perfect. Thanks as always for the prompt and clear advice 😁
Tod *********
@Ad**
, that's it (y) just have her sign 'em
Adam ***********
Just so I'm clear - she'd need to sign her i/d and housebook listing, and the kor ror 2 and 3 copies? Anything else? And is just her signature adequate or does she need to write anything else on the docs? Thanks again.
Tod *********
@Ad**
, you need the same same documentation whether you take your thai wife or not. Just make sure she signs the documents with her name on them ;)
Adam ***********
Hi
@T**
- quick question - all clear on the document requirements above. If you go to Savannakhet alone (ie without the wife) what additional documentation is required? Thanks in advance!
Tod *********
5000baht in Savannakhet
Dean *******
Tod how much does the 12 month multi entry cost please

Many thanks in advance
Tod *********
@Ja***
, (y) correct
James **********
Last one I promise. Is it a drop off application am and pick up next day pm? Like tourist Visas?
James **********
@Tod ********
many thanks.
Tod *********
To get that year-long, multi-entry Non-O based on marriage to a thai in Savannakhet you need

copies of:

the two thai marriage certificates (Kor Ror 2 & 3)

wife's thai i/d

wife's thai housebook listing

data page of your passsport

Take the original marriage certificate with you (the one with the rose border). That 5000baht, 2 passport sized photos, the application and you'll get the visa.

There's any number of ways to get to Savannakhet so I'll leave you to figure that one out ;)
James **********
@Tod ********
ok thanks, sorry to bother but what paperwork is required to obtain that? Copies of wedding certificates obviously, house registration? 5K Baht. Best way to Savannaket?
Tod *********
@James *********
, the year long multi-entry one is ONLY issued for being married to a thai national but it requires no proof of financials. RIght now the only two nearby consulates that are doing it are the one in Savannakhet Lao and the one in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam
Andre **********************
Yup and it's THB 5000 per application
James **********
Is it really the case that one can get Non O in Savannakhet without the 400 K?
