Hi. My husband and I will be flying to KL to apply for O Visa to be turned into Retirement Visa. He will be getting a retirement visa and I will get a dependent visa from his retirement. I was wondering if anyone has been to this consulate recently applying for the same visa? Will I need a Police Report from Thailand stating I have no criminal record here? I do have an FBI criminal check from America. Is that good enough? Also, I will get a medical certificate here in Thailand but will I need one from Malaysia as well? Thank you for your help!

. Good Luck (y) please report back IF you guys manage to get the visas from there. I googled around and not that many people go there for those visas so it'd be good to get first hand up to date info.

Also, does anyone know if I need to get my marriage certificate certified at the US Consulate? And what about the FBI criminal check and/or medical certificate. Do they need to be certified there as well?

That’s true about the medical. I’ll do some research and see how to get it done in KL. Thank you sooo much Tod! I really appreciate all your help!

the US consulate doesn't certify marriage certificates because you aren't married by the US gov't but at the state level. The only thing you could get would be a boilerplate affidavit where you state the marriage certificate is real and they'd notarize that.

The FBI check and the medical don't need certification but remember they listed a medical from Malaysia.

I should have asked the question before we booked our tickets. Haha! We had friends have a hard time in Vientiane and it was easy for them in KL. This is why we chose KL. And at Immigration, they told my husband he could do it within the country but as the dependent, I will have to leave the country. So we will do it together in KL. But I like your point Tod about “or” being used in the checklist. Thank you soooo much for your help. I really appreciate it!

I'm with
@J**
on this. There are far more 'user friendly' consulates in the area that you can get a Non-O based on being over 50 and one based on being married to someone who is over 50.

There are places such as Vientiane Laos where the process is a little simplier. Also you can do this at a local immigration office.

Remember Nicole, what is required at one thai consulate may or may not be the same requirements at another consulate, even another thai consulate in the same country.

I'd say tick all the boxes for the requirements at KL and you'll be fine. That means on the Non-O visa based on being over 50 a medical certificate (it says from Malaysia but I know someone who took a thai one and was okay).

Now as far as the police back ground check. It looks like ONLY one from thailand OR one from your country are listed (but it's ambiguous because at the top they say thailand and your country but in the numbered part they use "or" not "and")..

**Edited to reflect what that check list says.

You have read it now, this is the checklist with requirements, if you like to get a Visa from the Thai Embassy in KL you have to meet these requirements. You can try without the requested papers and claim I did not know you needed them, but I guess you will have to return later with the documents.

And somewhere else, I read that the medical certificate must come from the country you are applying from. But again, I haven’t heard that enforced yet.

Thank you. I did look at this. On the first checklist page, under qualifications at the top, it says “Have no criminal record against the security of Thailand and the applicant’s country of origin.” I haven’t heard of anyone needing that yet but I wanted to make sure.

And here the checklist for the dependent:

This is the checklist for the Non Immigrant O Visa (retirement) as published on the website of the Thai Embassy in KL. Print it out, check the boxes and hand it over with all the documents.
