We are in Penang trying to get our new visas. We are switching to a teaching visa and had no idea we needed the criminal background check. Any advice on how to handle this here? What exactly is it that they want us to turn in? Thanks for your help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the process of applying for a teaching visa (Non-B) while in Penang, Malaysia. It highlights the need for a criminal background check from both the applicant's home country and Thailand. One commenter suggests obtaining a single entry tourist visa to allow sufficient time to gather documentation before applying for the Non-B visa at a consulate.
Thanks so much Dave Bakewell! By the way, there is TOEIC test for Listening & Reading & TOEIC for Speaking & Writing, which is the one to be taken? Am I only required to produce my own passport for the test registration or some other documents as well?
Dave Bakewell, U are saying to go early on a Wed test day for a chance from a no-show? Is there other TOEIC test centres in Bangkok and whereabout in Chiang Mai for a TOEIC test?
Unfortunately I can't :/ because most people who get offered jobs for teaching have either the school or the agency they work thru compile their documentation to apply for the 90 day Non-B visa from a thai consulate in a nearby country. I don't know what is all in that packet of documents.
All I knew was the thai consulate in Penang now wants a police background check from both the country your passport is from and from thailand to issue Non-B's for teaching.
You are not going to be able to meet the requirements for the documentation for a 90 day Non-immigrant type B visa <- (what you call a teaching visa).
I'd get a single entry tourist visa so you have enough time when you come back into the country to get all your documentation correct and go to the consulate and try again for the Non-B.
