TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent updates indicate that when applying for a 90-day Non-B visa at the Thai consulate in Penang for teaching, applicants now need to provide police clearances from both their home country and Thailand. There is ongoing discussion about the depth and time frame of these background checks, as well as concerns regarding the tightening of procedures at the Penang consulate compared to other consulates. Some commenters emphasize the importance of schools being informed about these changes.

especially stealing milk off the doorstep...that's a big felony. ..no clean slate on that..lol
Ron *******
Don't go too Vietiane with that record. They keep you there as a milk monitor for 7 days.
Chris *******
How in depth and how far does it go back?
Gordon *******
How tough are they on a criminal record 'ie pety things like being drunk and stealing milk at 14 years of age does this count or is it just people who have jail records.

When you're a teacher, the school has to prepare certain documents in thai for a specific consulate. If your school isn't aware of these recent happenings there's nothing you can do. I asked to go to a different consulate but all my documents were already prepared for Penang. The problem is schools not being informed of changes like this

@Amber ******
can you update me on your situation? I am going to Penang to apply for a teaching visa in july and saw that you had problems.
Amber *******
Yeah my school is in the south

I think it has more to do with WHERE the school is located and the schools in the south of thailand just automatically send people to Penang, so they address it to them.

I would bet that most schools up in Bangkok use Vientiane and might address it to them too.
Amber *******
Good to know, that was not the case for me

I have seen schools put "Attn Thai Consulate" on the documents and let the students pick where they want to go.

Anyone know if the back ground check only applies to teaching as I'm off to Penang next week for my annual Non-B?

Only for getting a Bon-B for teaching.

remember though Penang stopped issuing year-long, multi-entry Non-B visas unless you are a managing director or hold at least 20% shares in the company.

all consulates need to be the same..not ad hok..so.people no what is correct or not

If Penang Consulate is stepping up the checks on all requirements in order of the MFA, it could lead to other consulates doing the same in the near future,

I don't know why people go to Penang. All I see on Facebook posts is every increasing problems for visas in Penang. Plenty of other consulates with less problems and requirements.

I know. Maybe he can give it a shot anyway?

This isn't about a Non-O visa it's about Non-B

@Dave *****
Try Ho Chi Minh consulate. I did my Non O there yrs ago. Very straight forward as long as your docs are in order.

I am not blaming the consulate one little bit. I am blaming the people who do not research the ever expanding list of requirements for Penang and then complain about it. When they could have gone to a much easier consulate that does not have the same requirements. I know full well that penang has a lot of requirements so if I needed a visa I would not go there. I would go to one that I know is easier and my chances of a visa are much higher. Wrong words I suppose. "problem consulate'....by problem I mean more complex.
Robert *******
@Mic****
, No, make sure you meet all the requirements, don't blame the consulate for doing their job.
Michael ********
Yes it used to be, but it isn't an easy consulate anymore is it......How many posts have there been now on ever increasing problems in Penang. There are plenty of other consulates that are known to be a LOT easier. I don't know why people keep going back to Penang and then complaining they were denied. PSA....don't go to a known problem consulate :)

That was the "go to" consulate for people in the south especially on the islands for easy tourist visas, easy year-long, Non-B's etc. Then they started tightening up and now they are really cracking down.

It won't hurt genuine tourists, BUT it's gonna really crimp the style of people living here on back-2-back tourist visas ;)
Robert *******
It was an easy consulate, and for the people living in the south of Thailand it is the most nearby consulate to visit.
Dave ******
Which one would you recommend?
Dave ******
Confirmed. I got rejected 3 weeks ago for not having them...
