Hello everyone, we are coming to Thailand to get married in June. I have 2 questions.

1. Has anyone married another person in Thailand before? (2 foreigners from a different country)

I am Greek/Canadian my fiance is from Myanmar. Please let me know of your experiences.

2. Has anyone recently entered on a tourist visa? Anyone gone into quarantine with their fiance or boyfriend using a different flight to come into the country? (but same day)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the process and requirements for two foreigners getting married in Thailand, highlighting necessary documents, such as the 'affirmation of freedom to marry', and advice regarding marriage registration amidst COVID-19 restrictions. It also addresses concerns about quarantine requirements when entering Thailand on a tourist visa, noting that couples need to travel on the same flight and are encouraged to check with hotels for ASQ specifics.

Be aware that currently, most amphurs in Bangkok are not performing marriage registrations due to covid restriction rules from the governor.

We used a translation service that had a contact at one of the Amphurs outside the city center.

My girlfriend spent a day calling around to different district offices but all said they weren't performing marriage registration and I contacted a ton of lawyers and translators that offer marriage registration assistance but only one had a contact at an Amphur that would perform the registration right now. The rest told me that they had to suspend that service for the time being.

When they are open again, you will need to bring two witnesses with you to the amphur and most offices will require that you have a translator as well.

We used Express Translation and they were great. They took care of absolutely everything to do with the Amphur. We took them all our documents so they could copy and pre send to the Amphur to prepare everything. Then, we just showed up to their office and they had a taxi for us to the Amphur, which was about an hour from downtown.

At the Amphur, the translator took care of everything and we just waited and signed the papers when they were given to us.

I had already gotten my affidavit to marry from my embassy and had it translated and certified at the Thai Ministry by another translation company, but that first place didn't have any contacts to get the Amphur registration done.

Consider waiting until after July 1, Phuket should have quarantine free options by then. For quarantine, you both need to be on the same flight, no exceptions. A lot of hotels won’t even except you if you’re not married yet. But some will

Not sure, I have never been to Myanmar. And for the Phuket flights I think they are still being negotiated.

Do you know any that do? I will email many as I have been but just seeing if anyone elsehad this experience so that I can skip the many emails!

The thai government is supposedly organizing a number of new direct charter flights starting in july 1st. She may be able to go via singapore by then, so I would have a look at that in a couple weeks. Best of luck!

they are but that's going to depend on what flights are available out of Myanmar and also whether he can transit in SG as I don't think he'll be able to buy 2 separate tickets

assuming the fiance is in Myanmar right now then there are no direct flights to Phuket so that wouldn't be possible.

Two foreigners can indeed get married in thailand. EACH person will need to get the "affirmation of freedom to marry" notary document from their respective consulates, have it translated into thai, have those translations certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then you can go to an Amphur and register the marriage.

I don't know if your burmese fiance is gonna have a problem getting that affirmation to marry notary document from her consulate here. She should contact them

As far as can you room together during ASQ, that is between you and the hotel you stay at. Contact them and ask

We can't come to Greece unless we are married that's the problem. Also, we don't mind about any documents, the reasons for marrying in Thailand are that we need to get married not for vacation ^_^

would i be correct to add that the marriage would only be valid in Thailand?

If they r coming just to get married (as part of a holiday trip let's say) and then plan to go back to Greece/Canada/Myanmar or wherever... They'd then have to go to MFA again to legalize the pink wedding certificate/ KoRo2/ and then register the marriage with the Consulate of such country...

Sounds like a lot of hassle.

Rather marry in the country they will live in; and then just do a symbolic ceremony here in TH

Just my 2 cents

Getting married in thailand
@Fede****
is totally a valid marriage in most countries

it is in Australia...

Depends entirely on what country they are planning to use their marriage certificate in.

Canada for example does not require any sort of marriage registration with the embassy.

As long as the marriage is legal in the country it was registered in, the Canadian government will recognize it.

You will need to get it translated and then notarized either at the Thai Ministry or your embassy if they offer that service.

Most translation services will take care of the ministry stamp too after translation, though.

I think when most people think about "getting married in Thailand" they think of a pristine beach setting ceremony bla bla bla...

Not having to go to MFA twice, run errands in hectic crazy hot Bangkok, to get a stamp here, another one there... get it translated, bla bla.

Yes, they can pay for these services.

As far as Canada, im not sure. But in the USA, upon return from your trip... your marital status is still SINGLE, unless u do the paperwork to register your marriage.

"They will accept your marriage certificate" is NOT the same as "your marital status has been updated on the records of the Canadian Government"

Personally I just think its a paperwork nightmare when you can just get married in the corner of your house and enjoy a "ceremony" here in Thailand which is what most people are after.

@Federico *********
Well, I already said what the deal was with Canada. I have no official marital status registered with the government.

Getting married "in the corner of your house" might be a good option if your partner is also from your country or can travel to your country to register the marriage, but that's not an option for a lot of people.

Canada makes it almost impossible for anyone from a developing country to get any sort of visa unless they are on some sort of work program.

Even after marriage, there is no visa that allows your spouse to live with you in the country.

You have to sponsor them to apply for permanent residency and wait for over a year to find out if they're approved.

@Dave **********
i understand all that.

They are a couple. So surely they already live together somewhere on earth...

Not saying it's Canada.

Just saying... Register wherever they already live... And will continue to live.

Rather than having to go through lots of paperwork just for some pictures and a nice ceremony.

Just my opinion.

they're arriving on different flights so I'm assuming they don't live together at the moment.
