Appreciate any comments and advice. (I have a non O with 1 year ext retirement visa.) After 3 weeks of attempting to resolve this, here’s where it’s at. My wife is not near 50. So after speaking and meeting with many visa agents both here in BKK and Pattaya, I’ve concluded that even the best agents, that I have so far found, cannot get a non O dependent visa for my wife approved. And even the optional DTV school path is being denied. It looks like we would both have to return to the US and start over with applying for non OA retirement for me and non O A dependent for my wife. We would apparently need insurance and I’m 74 so if even possible it would be very expensive? Any comments or advice is appreciated.
Answer summary
The original poster (OP) is seeking advice on obtaining a dependent visa for their wife while holding a Non-O retirement visa. The OP has faced challenges in getting a non O dependent visa for their wife due to her age and issues related to the visa application process in Thailand, receiving various suggestions from the community. Some users recommend returning to the US to apply for a Non-OA visa for the OP and a Non-O dependent visa for the wife due to age restrictions. Others have pointed out that agents have not adequately proposed solutions, such as applying for different visa types or using educational routes. The discussion highlights the complexity of immigration laws in Thailand and the financial considerations for older applicants regarding insurance.

If you don’t mind my asking, which consulate did your agent recommend and did they guarantee you’d get the dependent stamp?

They gave me reason at the the Thai consulate in Tokyo only saying they cannot issue the non 0 dependent to my wife, but instead issued her a TR 90 day tourist visa that was stamped for 69 days only when we returned to Bangkok.

Have you been given a reason she can't get a non-o dependent visa? I'm curious as we just submitted my wife's application for the same, I recently got my 90 day non-0 + 1 year extension. Yes, I'm using an agent (go ahead, y'all tell me how silly I am and am wasting money... 😃)

You are correct in all matters...going back would be the easy way...ahh the price we pay to spend our last days in the sun...and about the insurance, download the Foreign Insurance Certificate Form from the consulate and have Blue-Cross fill it out...that should suffice for the requirement...on a different note...if you get around fair enough, maybe living in more than one country can solve the matter by just exiting and staying at your other flat for a few months so you can avoid 800k each and any additional costly insurance...Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Philippines, even China have great options for rentals...you could do a 6n6 or 6n3n3...short flights...its workable but if your ailing perhaps not..

Depending on her age and financial situation she might want to look into other visa options available to her. Now about you and a Non-OA visa. I'm currently 75 on my 7th Non-OA extension and do have a couple of pre-existing conditions that my Thai policy exempts, my most recent renewal with AXA was 34,000 baht for the year. With the high deductible its pretty much worthless but it keeps immigration happy. Luckily I also have good medical coverage through Blue Cross/Blue Shield from the USA that covers me in Thailand and when I'm in Thailand they waiver all of my deductibles and co-pays they cover everything 100% including my medicine. In Prachinburi where I live I have to pay the doctor or hospital up front and get reimbursed but for big things and 6 month checks i go to Bunrungrad in Bangkok and they bill my insurance directly. I guess you already know Medicare doesn't cover you outside the USA. Anyway AXA or AIA have policies designed specifically for the Non-OA requirements and Depending on your medical situation be prepared to pay around 30,000 baht at your age.

Steven L. Daugherty Wow, you are a lucky one with the Blue cross insurance. Is that from military service or govn work.? I am still hoping one day medicare will cover outside the US. It would save them money.

Mark Faught I fell in love with Thailand during Vietnam back in 1971 went back many years later and the spark reignited. Then I was very lucky, met my wonderful wife and stayed. Wishing you all the best in your endeavors.

Mark Faught I am definitely extremely lucky I was able to carry my government coverage into my retirement. However it is available to anyone but at a higher cost. Added coverage for my wife is quite a bit more expensive. But a necessary evil when we're in the USA and her Thai coverage dissappears. Luckily she's still a bit younger than my old ass, so a little cheaper for now still least. Hope my information is helpful. Whatever you eventually work out I wish you well and hope you will eventually enjoy life here in The Land Of Smiles.

Get your type O one year extension then return to the US, and apply for her dependant visa there. They have only been issuing dependant visas when the spouse is under 50 years old, and you apply in your passport country after you have your one year extension.

Your wife is not going to get a Non-O dependant visa while you are on a Non-O retirement visa. It might be possible for her to apply for another Non-immigrant type of visa, get 1 extension of stay and when needing the 2nd extension of stay change the reason for the extension to being your dependant. I'm surprised no agent has offered you this route

Why can't the wife get a non-o dependent visa? We just applied for the same from Vietnam... waiting on the results.

it depends on what visa you are on. If you are on a Non-O based on retirement I would not expect a positive outcome

Hi John, on a 5 year DTV, coming and going from UK, after the initial 6 month cooking course has concluded, would you recommend booking another course for next year’s entry or do you think it’s not necessary since you already have the visa and it doesn’t show the reason it was obtained? For the first entry I simply entered the visa number on the TDAC and nothing was said, easy entry…
