What are the long-term visa options for self-employed individuals in Thailand without the 500,000 baht savings requirement?

Is there a visa that would allow me to stay in Thailand long-term without having 500,000 baht in my bank account? I’m self-employed and earn over $6,000 per month from my US-based business. I was told that I’m not allowed to work remotely while on an education visa, and I’m currently unable to qualify for the DTV because of the savings requirement. What other legitimate options do I have?
Answer summary
An expat looking to stay long-term in Thailand without having to maintain 500,000 baht in savings is seeking alternatives to the DTV visa, which he cannot qualify for due to the financial requirement. He mentions potential obstacles with working remotely on an education visa. Various comments suggest different strategies, including borrowing funds to meet the DTV requirements, starting with an education visa and saving money while living in cheaper countries like Vietnam, or exploring the LTR visa, which has higher financial requirements. There is also advice on managing finances and options for other temporary visas that may allow for saving the necessary funds.

You can qualify for an ED visa. You only need 1k balance in your account over the course of 3 months. Make sure to pick a reliable school, you renew every 90 days -visa is good for 1 year. During that time you can save up money to qualify for a different visa.

going to similar neighbouring countries might be a good idea for you. spending 3-6 months in vietnam with a visa run and then getting another 2-6 months in indonesia via c1 visa would round up enough time to save 15k

Maybe start with an METV and travel SE Asia while working remotely. That is a 6 to 9 month Thai tourist visa. When you save the required amount, get the DTV

JazzyFlower6176 you can easily live on $1000/month in Vietnam. If you do that for 3 months you will be able to save the $15k. Then you're good to go for DTV, which is the visa you want to get, indeed. After the 3 months you can resume lavish lifestyle on $6k/month.

JazzyFlower6176 I get it at your age, but start stacking that paper. Perhaps you are doing it right by trying to cut your expenses. But , one recommendation to you maximize every year your 401k , this year it is $24,500. Please trust me on this, you will have a few million by the time you are close to retirement age if you work 30 years. Saving gets easier especially when you start getting those promotions and merit increases. Put that max in and you won't even feel the pain after a while. But second, get you a second seperate money market account that you dump $500 a month into a forget about it. Don't touch it. You gonna be all right, once the money starts stacking you gonna be like damn. It just starts piling up. Hang in there. 💪🏾

For all those saying it shouldn’t be that hard to save. Yes, incomes are VERY high in the USA. But everything is VERY expensive from Health Insurance, rent, and the absolute need for a car and car insurance.

I LOVE my simple life in Thailand.

There is another way. Come to Thailand and work as an English teacher for a year. You won’t make much money as a teacher but maybe you can remote work in evening and teach. You won’t have Air Conditioning but working at a government school is easy. Schools have MANY MANY MANY days of holidays and shows so you will have a lot of time for yourself.

Joe Jojo maybe i'm wrong but if you live in Chiang Mai, you have to go to the immigration office in that province, and you can't arrange the extension of a non-immigrant O visa at an immigration office in another province, can you? So how did they do that? Did they go to Chiang Mai or can you get the extension in any immigration office?

In your case the DTV is the only visa that will allow you to legally work remotely from Thailand. I suggest you somehow find the 500k baht you require to show in your bank account. It really shouldn't be difficult for someone who earns almost 200k baht per month

there was actually a recent case about a neighbor ratting someone out about this in Chang Mai. It went to court and the judge basically ruled that it was OK because the company and pay etc was outside of Thailand. However she did a lot of work in a common area of her apartment building. which caused some other kind of violation. So if you do it, do it behind closed doors, with a vpn and tell no one.

You have none. I am remote worker on a DTV and spent the last few months researching alternatives and can vouch if you are working remotely and want to stay in Thailand legally then DTV or LTR are your only options. If you can't qualify financially for DTV you have zero chance of qualifying for LTR. Even the visa where you cannot work remotely, like retirement, marriage have a financial requirement. Open a savings account cut back on unnecessary expenses and start saving really is your best choice. Alternatively borrow the money off a friend or relative, let it sit in your account for a few months then apply. Once you are approved pay it back. there is no need to keep it there post approval unless you do an in country extension.

Get a new credit card (or multiple cards), possibly CapitalOne or Bilt, that does not charge international fees. Get a cash advance, and now it is running at 4.99% for one year. Borrow 500K using the credit card and park it in your checking. I would suggest opening a Charles Schwab checking account because it refunds ATM fees worldwide. After three months, get your DTV, and then try to pay off the loan within the year to avoid incurring an enormous interest rate. Come to Thailand and save at least 3K a month and use the other 3K for your expenses. Make it a goal of your life to save at least 3K. After you have 20K saved, it's only one year. Take 10K and open a Fidelity account and buy 10K worth in SPYI; it will generate around 800-1000 in dividend income. Continue like usual. Watch Professor G's investing. Good luck and happy living.

JazzyFlower6176 there isn't even typically a "next time", they don't ask to see the 500k again after you get the visa, unless you want to renew in country. Which isn't necessary as it's a 5 year multiple entry visa. They may ask for proof you are still doing what you applied for (also unlikely but has happened) but at the airport then they are more interested in things like a contract and evidence of ongoing payments into your account, there isn't a strict requirement to keep the 500k there at all times like there is with retirement.

Ivan McAvinchey when I enter the kingdom I’m always prepared like it’s the first time with a DTV… I.e. having the 500k in the bank seasoned… if IO asks I’m ready… this visa is sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign affairs and not immigration… so there could be a disconnect. Some DTV holders are posting horror stories when they are re enter the kingdom. I don’t know if it is true… but don’t want to take any chances on my plans.

imtylerd********

The 500k savings requirement is to make sure you can support yourself here in a foreign country. Yes, Thailand is cheap or cheaper than western countries but most of the time, it’s not savings that is the issue, it’s spending. To be honest, you need to take a deeper look at your spendings and budgeting in your country. Otherwise, you are not setting yourself up for living here long-term even though things are cheaper here. Look at your spendings, budget and save at least 500k. That requirement is the floor not ceiling. Best of luck!
