ORIGINAL POSTER
A foreign tourist has warned travellers after being denied entry at Thailand’s Don Mueang Airport for insufficient funds. Immigration officers enforced the regulation requiring visitors to prove they possess at least 20,000 baht upon arrival.

The traveller claimed she was unaware of the rule and was refused permission to withdraw cash from an ATM. She expressed frustration at the lack of clear guidance and was told to attempt entry through a different airport.

Thai authorities confirm that proof of financial means is a mandatory requirement, though enforcement remains discretionary. Tourists are advised to ensure they carry adequate funds or documentation to prevent border issues.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A foreign tourist was denied entry at Don Mueang Airport for not having the required 20,000 baht as proof of funds upon arrival. The tourist was unaware of this requirement and expressed frustration over the lack of clear guidance. While Thai authorities confirm this rule, enforcement appears discretionary. Community comments suggest varying experiences with the rule, with some travelers noting they have not been asked for proof of funds and speculating on other possible reasons for the denial.

Theres a lot more to this than being stated by those circulating the narrative that normally comes with this post.

She's admited to spending a ridiculous amount of time in thailand over the last 2 years on visa exemption in her own video and is proud of being able to milk the system, she was also extremely rude to the IO from the get go, ignoring him and just talking into her phone because 'recording for tiktok & Instagram' is clearly far more important than showing just a modicum of respect to the IO.

She's back in now anyway, she flew back to BKK and got in without issue (although she doesnt admit it, i suspect agents were involved)
Scotty *******
It's pretty simple stay with in the rules and have the required money and be courteous to IO

The only people that have issues are ones that flex the rules trying to stay in thailand on tourist exemptions extending them and doing border runs just get the correct visa and you dont have a problem
Robin *******
She said in the article I read that she had entered Thailand many times, so maybe not just enough money, but an excuse to stop someone they don’t want in the kingdom
Justin ******
I've only flown into Thailand twice this year so far. We are heading to Laos today from Don Muaeng and coming back Saturday. I have not been asked once yet to show any type of money.

there is more to this story. The "proof of funds" is only a tool Immigration uses when they want to deny entry. The actual reason this person was denied entry was most probably something else. Maybe a long list of visa-exempt stays? Or she was intoxicated?

there is a lot more to it and it all came out on reddit. She had stayed over 150 days this year and was an entitled asshole to the immigration agent.
Graham ******
@John ****
so not having the 20k cash made it very simple for her to be denied entry, what a fool
John *****
@Graham *****
They totally used it on purpose because she was being a dick. Even live streamed herself on Instagram going to the holding cell.
Greg ***********
@John ****
ah, here we go!
Greg ***********
@John ****
thanks! I watched her two videos. . . . a totally "entitled" person. She thinks she is in her rights but actually sje is breaking a few rules, one of it being living in Thailand long term on tourist entries
Luke *********
Nope
David ***********
Its common knowledge the 20k rule although its also common knowledge that its rarely asked for. However, easy to show bank statement online etc. I suspect theres more to this that the money
Philip *********
@David **********
it is only common knowledge to people that have been coming to Thailand for a long time, I think it may have only been introduced around
*******
or more enforced then. For a first time tourist, many wouldn't be aware of this. Although not letting her get cash from the ATM probably means there were other reasons entry was denied.

traveled to Thailand many times and never heard of it

@Jim *********
if you apply for any kind of visa, the informations made very clear
John ******
@David **********
written in the requirements: must CARRY at least 20.000
Steve *******
@David **********
the rule is to have CASH, so bank statements won't help if they actually enforce the rule.

Thailand is stuck in 1952.
Jeffrey **********
@David **********
it is not common knowledge
Simon ************
@Jeffrey *********
agree.... I have never been asked and never knew about it. I for one could not proved I had the funds as my phone would not of worked until I got picked up from family outside the terminal.

@David **********
the requirement in Thai law for a tourist is 20k in cash at the point of entry, that's the law
Fred ******
@Graham *****
There is nothing in Thai Law for this or for most of the non-sense from immigration. Immigration constantly make up rules depending on how xenaphobic and uneducated whoever is running the Immigration dept happens to be. How harmful these rules may be to Thialand's tourist industry doesn't really matter and is often at odds with more intelligent decisions. A good example was the increase of the Visa exempt stay to 60 days with the ability to extend 30 days in-country. Not all tourists are the same and there is a large number that have financial resources to travel for extended periods. At the same time the xenephobic moron currently running the Immigration dept spouting no tourist stays more then two weeks. If they do then they are a criminal. Which of course is non-sense.
Graham ******
@Fred *****
Sorry, you are wrong, it is one thing that is indeed written in Thai Law, the 1979 Immigration Act I believe
Tony **********
Never been asked for proof of funds.
Lynnette *******
@Tony *********
so because you've never been asked does that mean it's not a requirement? 🤔
James *******
@Tony *********
exactly, this means it NEVER happens.Well done chaps on your valuable input.

any thing can happen in Thailand

Comming and going.many times in twenty odd years never been asked. Hope that answers you're question

I didn't have a question.

same here
Jordan *****
Probably just a pretext to deny them entry. Even if they had the money they would have denied them for not being tourists and the like
Brady *******

thats only enough for one good night in Pattaya lol you shoukd have at least thaf

More to that story I think . You can show bank statements online

a lot more to it, ive seen the videos that she recorded and posted herself.

there is a dress code since 1979 but they usually use the 20k THB rule instead. See below.

I bet you can show Thai bank

@J *************
I'll take that bet ;)

@J *************
Yes, Thai bank account are accepted.
Pui *****
@Jay ****
bank statements and online banking are not acceptable according to the actual rules. You make get lucky, or you may not, depending on the immigration officer's mood.
Jay *****
@Pui ****
Please read what I wrote, a THAI BANK account. Not other foreign bank accounts.
Pui *****
@Jay ****
there's no difference whether it is a Thai or foreign bank account. Bank account balances don't qualify but you may get an officer that allows it.
Graham ******
@Jay ****
You are trying to convince an Immigration Officer that you are a real tourist to get your entry stamp and you propose to disclose your Thai bank account with funds in. Good luck with that.
Greg ***********
@J *************
you will lose the bet in 9 out of 10
สก็อต *********
@Greg **********
guess I was just lucky . But tbh I never use cash here I just pay via prompt pay or scan
เดแคลน ***********
@Greg **********
its meant to be cash but from personal experience there is/can be some discretion.

when I had to leave and come back in on a visa exemption at the end of 2022 and start the non-o process again I didn't have cash but the IO accepted seeing my account balance with Krungthai (maybe different because I was on a non-o before for a couple years)
Allan **************
@เดแคลน **********
.That was a long time ago things have changed a lot this is 2025.
Greg ***********
@เดแคลน **********
this means you have just been lucky. Many others are not so lucky and need to show CASH and only cash
