I have a few questions about getting an SETV in Penang. (US citizen. One visa exempt entry in my passport)

1) Can I use an agent, or do I have to go in person?

2) Do I need a ticket to my home country, or is a ticket out of Thailand to another ASEAN country ok?

Any other advice for Penang is appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking information about applying for a Special Tourist Visa (SETV) in Penang, including whether an agent can be used or if in-person appearance is necessary. Additionally, they want to know if a flight ticket to their home country is required, or if an onward ticket to another ASEAN country suffices. Comments suggest that visa application requirements may vary based on individual circumstances such as travel history, and that proof of funds and onward travel may be necessary.

If you have a history of living here on back-2-back tourist visas OR have a lot of tourist visas in your passport you WILL be required to show proof of travel back to your country not just to another country around here.

every guest house you stay in down there has a "visa service" in it. There's no reason you can't do it yourself though.

You need proof of funds (20K baht or the equivalent in a bank account), proof of onward travel (OUT of thailand in 60 - 90 days)

it all depends on your history of living and staying inside Thailand, If you have an overstay stamp in your passport, you will not be served. If you have longer history you need flight back home country and bank statements. But the latest information you can get from

I don't have any overstays, but I do have the "7 day visa extension denied" stamp that immigration issues after you've already extended once. Jim Tachinamurthy
