Heads up people :O Don't say you weren't warned ;)
THAI CONSULATE PENANG MALAYSIA
NOTE: This ONLY affects the thai consulate in Penang Malaysia NOT the other consulates in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur or Kota Bharu) and NOT consulates in other countries.
These requirements are ONLY for getting a tourist visa NOT for getting a Non-Immigrant visa of any type.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Thai consulate in Penang, Malaysia is implementing stricter requirements for tourist visa applications. This update specifically affects the tourist visa process at this consulate only, and does not apply to other consulates in Malaysia or abroad. Applicants must provide hotel bookings, proof of onward travel, and evidence of sufficient funds, which has led to concerns and discussions among expats about the implications for tourism and the broader impact on the immigration process.
when the IO opens the envelope to check what is inside, I have clearly seen 1000 baht notes inside. I would not say that makes me interesting but it did prick my interest. Just because you haven't seen something or you don't believe something does not mean it isn't going on.
maybe I am looking in a different place to you but I assure you I have seen this happen at every 90 day report I have done in Thailand and the envelopes were always white.

Neil Lynch. You see many different things to I.
I've done many 90 day reports and have, on All occasions failed to see White, envelopes being handed to IO, and was always lead to believe, that, worldwide, such practices were carried out using the somewhat less, obvious brown envelopes...!
the last time I done a border entry was just over a year ago, I had my

baht in cash but I witnessed plenty who didn't slipping 200 baht to the IO. If that is not a bribe please tell me what is? I have also witnessed at every 90 day report I have had to do white envelopes stuffed with money being handed to IOs. If Thailand really wants to clean up it's immigration laws maybe it needs to begin with it's own office rather than focusing on people who are contributing to the Thai economy with the money they spend in shops, bars and restaurants. They also need some continuity in their rules which is definitely not in place as can be seen in this post, Penang is strict, Vientiane is easy.
If the Thai officials were genuine they wouldn't take the 200 baht bribes. I would predict this will damage Thailand's already diminishing tourist industry.

Virtually every twat there all using an ‘agent’ to provide accommodation & forwarding tickets & having to slip 200bht in their passport at immigration as proof of funds. My observations. If your a legitimate Tourist you can obtain a TV anywhere.
Michael *********
Because 90% were never ‘genuine’ tourists.

Because so many illegal ‘teachers’ running from Phuket & Samui, with none of the evidence required & paying for the ‘proofs required’ .

hi, just a quick question, there ask about accommodation booking, but for how many nights min.? ..many travelers traveling without fix plan for two months!.. and unfortunately, I plan to do my "TR" visa in Penang (fly booked already).. Thank you..
, at most consulates that require proof of lodging if you're staying with friends or family you have a letter from them stating you're staying with there and a copy of their thai i/d card.

And what if your legitimately staying here in Thailand and staying with friends or family?
do you know anything about how many nights they want to see the hotel booking for down there?

Its strange how every consulate have different rules.
I wish they not do that restriction every where...And anyway , in my opinion rules are important but a lot of foreigner here are teacher and spend there salary in the country. Blocking there acces will be an education waste and economicly too.

If your working in the Kingdom legally you won’t be going to get a TV from Penang anyway.

The Thai government had and still have some problem with teachers local and foreigner (sex offender etc...) So now it is very hard to get a visa if you dont show all the documents that they ask for. Anyway people who have kids rather like to have their kids safe at school without any perverts around.

Sounds like Penang is good for a visit but not a visa. Tod do you think other consolites will start being this strict.
putting it that way it does sound reasonable. I am glad I dont have to do that anymore. Just do the things to get my extensions and I am happy as a clam at high tide. Thanks for all your good work Tod.

I think Penang is consulate that gets a LOT of traffic and there are a lot of "agents" <- people and companies who aren't really agents but who push paper down there for peoples' visa needs. It is just a way for them to cut the work load down to something more manageable AND to weed out people who won't put the time into checking what is required to get the visa they want at that consulate.
More and more consulates are requiring people to show the 3-proof-ofz (onward travel, funds, hotel booking) for single entry tourist visas. In fact the ONLY consulate that requires none of those is the one in Vientiane.

They're quite strict

Sounds fair enough to me.

Sound good as so many people show up to Penang with hands in the pockets :) No documents except their passport. Looks like they are thinking about nothing when presenting them self at the embassy.

Just out of curiosity, if showing a bank statement (to support a Tourist Visa application) in £ Sterling, how would the "Others must state the converted sum and rate" part work? Would you just write it on the statement yourself?
Nic *******
I'm still curious about this. How is the conversion meant to be proved? Showing the XE rated printed out? Asking your bank to print and email you a statement in USD or EUR if this is even possible?
Biff *******
No
Velle ***********
most banks can print a statement in USD
Robert ********
Not common but not that unusual, many tourists from the region buying holiday homes here open bank accounts to pay bills and expenses.
Biff *******
Showing the £ to ฿ rate? And then add a note on the statement itself? I mean, if it were me, I could show either a UK bank statement or a Thai bank statement, but I'm thinking that a Thai bank statement isn't something a genuine tourist would have.

Just to be safe what I'd do is do a print off from one of the big currency exchanges.
posted further down another piece of paper from them that heavily suggests it does not need to be an air ticket- it just mentions "ticket" and further specifically references the possibility of your using a personal vehicle.
that doesn't necessarily mean it is the case, these things are not always literal. If you were going to take that announcement totally literally, it would not allow you to stay in a guesthouse or condo, or with your partner or friend, or in a property you own, as it only references "hotel booking" and "house rental".
It is possible "travel information" is the requirement, and "booking of air ticket leaving Thailand" is only an example. I have got visas before from more than one consulate who specified "air ticket" but who did not insist on it.

Tod Daniels. That's what is written on the consulate's update that you posted Tod.
