What are the consequences of overstaying a visa in Thailand by 8 days?

I have to do my visa run June 12 but it’s better for a number of reasons for me to leave back home to US on the 20th. That means I would overstay by 8 days. But doing a visa run on the 12gh just to leave on the 20th would suck would it be so bad to overstay? I reaaalllly don’t want to overstay

Guys I’m not gonna overstay thanks for the (constructive) comments

Also, just because the visa ends June 12th doesn’t mean you can’t do your visa bounce earlier. As Brandon suggested, take a trip to Singapore or somewhere else for a few days.

The very best that can happen to you is a 4000 baht fine BUT if for some reason you come into contact with the police while on overstay then you risk being deported and banned for 5 years (even for a 1 day overstay). Now you know what you are risking you have to make your own judgement, but a quick border bounce to ensure you do not overstay seems a no brainer to me

Use it as a reason to take a quick vacation to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur or something. Then it won't feel as much like a border bounce

If you are stopped for any reason by anyone in authority, and are discovered to be on overstay, even one day, and not on your way to the airport, you will be arrested, placed in immigration detention until you pay the fine, and the plane fare for your deportation, then banned from returning for five years. Overstaying is never recommended.

you will learn quickly to keep 500 baht in your pocket. Just in case…

you're living in the past filled with rumors from long ago. With overstay there is no longer buying your way out of it, and hasn't been for over a decade.

uh-huh. Definitely the past 😂. Ever been randomly asked to produce your passport? Me neither. Ever gotten stopped in a traffic stop? How did that end?

With overstay, you pay 500 baht per day on exit. To a maximum of 20,000 baht. BKK has a very large section to deal with overstay. Often a good sized lineup.

Thailand likes tourists. Nobody is looking to arrest and deport for short overstay

they're not hunting for people on short overstay, the problem comes if you are lifted for something else and discovered to be on overstay

yes - I agree. That’s where having 500-1000 baht comes in handy. I would say if on overstay already (never a great idea- but many do), tread very carefully. And be extremely deferential if you find yourself in a spot.

You will be charged 4000 baht on exit cash only. If you get checked before such as in a bar you will be arrested and taken to an IDC.

IDC and deported I doubt coming back anytime soon.

Overstaying with a visa isn't the best idea... You'll probably be stopped at immigration and pay 500THB per day. That's only for the fine. You may get more troubles depending on the will of the officer. That's considered as "surrendering to authorities". If caught in the street, you'll probably be fined, deported and banned.
