What are the chances of getting another tourist visa after a warning stamp in my passport at the Thai consulate in Vientiane?

Hi, I'm on my 5th consecutive tourist visa from Vientiane, each of which was extended for 30 days at Chaeng Watthana.

Last time there was a warning issused in my passport that any further tourist visa applications may be rejected. But I did read of some people getting 7 consecutive tourist visas from Vientiane.

What do you think is likely to happen if I go there again and apply for another? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is inquiring about the likelihood of obtaining another tourist visa after already having five consecutive ones from Vientiane, Laos, along with a warning stamp in their passport suggesting future applications may be denied. The discussion explores various community experiences and opinions about dealing with the Thai consulate in Vientiane, suggesting alternative strategies such as visiting different Thai consulates in Vietnam or Malaysia, or possibly obtaining a new passport to reset their visa history.

Sounds good, any one else got any experiences from Sav?

This is my favourite guesthouse in Sav. It might be 3 kms from the consulate but it's in a good part of town. In Thai money it's about 300 for a fan room, I'm sure they have air-con (pay a bit more), free wifi, and free banana and coffee in the morning. The owner is a very nice fellow, after about my third visit there he gave me a lift to the consulate to pick up my passport. They also have two or three bicycles for hire (pay peanuts). It's also close to a great baguette shop, and close to the Maekhong (night markets and eats down there).

I have never been asked for proof of funds at Sav (even though it might be an official requirement there) but I give them proof of onward travel, a flight out of Thailand and of course that address in Thailand, so find a good Thai friend who can offer you that address and contact number. I even chuck in a Police Clearance certificate from Australia (whether they need it or not)>

The thai consulate in Savannakhet requires proof of 20K baht (or the equivalent) in a bank account, and proof of onward travel.

I have had about 7 T Visas from Laos (Vientiane and Savannakhet) over the last 2 years, though one of those visas is in my new passport...try Sav, it's quiet, the consulate gets about a third of the crowd you get at the Laos capital, and it's a lot cheaper than Vientiane also.

I would say is pick a different thai consulate other than Vientiane and Penang and you should be okay.

Another thing to do that "wipes the proverbial slate clean" (at least as far as thai consulates are concerned) would be to get a new passport.

At this time no thai consulate uses a database to track how many tourist visas you get. All they do is look thru your passport and count them.. Getting a new passport can (and does) give you a clean slate to start racking up tourist visas again.

But even if he gets a visa from outside Thailand...the key is whether Thai Immigration honors it and allows him to enter.
Tod *********
you are correct
@Ja***
, the immigration people at passport control will still see his entry history even if a person changes passports because their system matches against name, dob, sex country of origin etc.

In fact they can see ALL your entry history to the country for as far back as they want to go if they wanna look at it.

BUT

that's not the problem the O/P is facing. they have (or had) a warning sticker from Vientiane in their passport and that means they can't use that consulate again.
James ********
But Thai Immigration can still match up his movements online when he seeks entry...???

The red stamp in my passport was only glued in, accidentaly fell out and was then misplaced. That might be a good thing for further applications.

But yes the obvious thing I should do is get a different type of visa.

I'd say you're out nothing by trying for another tourist visa in Vientiane. I mean at least you'll know then. If you're denied there make some other plans for another consulate.

I could try for another tourist visa in Vientiane, and if not try for 30 days visa exempt entry. Or instead then fly/travel to Hanoi from Laos to try for a tourist visa.

@Tod ********
yes that sticker was the same as mine which fell out.

The red official consulate stamp is now still complete, and was not overlapping on the sticker.
Tod *********
notice how they made the red official consulate stamp overlap on the warning sticker? I don't know if yours was like that but even if the warning sticker fell off the red stamp might not be complete.

worth checking anyway.
Tod *********
@Tom ********
I finally found a warning stamp that was a sticker. Was yours like this?
Tod *********
@T**
, well, then you should be okay to try that consulate again.

I see, yea mine was definitely glued in and is no longer there

or this
Tod *********
Strange that the red stamp in your passport was glued in :/ It's usually a stamp on the page where they stuck the last visa you got from them like these

Best option to go to language school to get paperwork for Education visa...
Tod *********
I wouldn't jump on the ED visa bandwagon just yet. There are options the O/P could do to further their stay here on tourist visas

If you've been red stamped in Vietiane, I'd rate your chances as zero in Penang of obtaining a visa.

With your amount of visas, i would hazard a guess Penang is out anyway, red stamp or not.

If I wasn't allowed to apply for another tourist visa in Vientiane, seems likely that I also wouldn't be allowed in for example Penang, Malaysia.

Or you think it would be fine there?

If I flew into Don Muang on a 6th tourist visa though, I think would be a high chance of them asking for proof of funds/onward travel/accommodation etc.

Or perhaps can cross on land in Malaysia.
Tom *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Wow I see. Didn't know people go there for visas. But again if I arrive back in Don Muang, likely they will ask for all the proofs now I think after this many visas. And I understand it happens more in Don Muang.
Tod *********
Your best bet would be the thai consulate in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. There was a recent post by someone with many tourist visas in his passport and he wasn't questioned at all at the thai consulate in Vietnam.
Tod *********
The red stamps are consulate specific, meaning just because you have a red stamp from the Vientiane consulate it doesn't necessarily mean you can't apply at another thai consulate for a tourist visa.

I would say that Penang wouldn't be my first choice because they've tightened up a LOT and with the number of tourist visas you have now you're going to need to show proof you're going back to your country for the proof of onward travel from Penang
Tod *********
People who have the red warning stamp in their passport from the Thai consulate at Vientiane and who are foolish enough to go back there for another tourist visa get denied.

The internet is full of reports of people who didn't notice they received the warning stamp, and went back there and were denied visa.

It's time for you to pick a different consulate

How is it easier? Further and a more expensive trip.

yes. And there are people who can help you out.

I'm thinking of Malaysia. Is it easier there?

I guess no-one knows as it has not happened to many people.

My wife has been here for 4.5 years on tourist visas from Cambodia. We always fly and never been asked for money or appt details. Was worried last time as things have changed in Cambodia. Seeing Canadian woman denied entry as not having 20k cash doesn't help. Wouldn't want my wife carrying that around.
Robert *******
I know, and you can use the search option on this page to find reports of people being denied entry.

What would happen if I failed to give them the appropriate proof of accommodation/funds/onward travel?

Get 7 days stay in Thailand?(with red stamp in passport?)-Get detained? Or have to just wander back into Laos and fly/travel to Vietnam, then back to the UK.
Robert *******
If you cross from Laos to Thailand, yes you would be sent back to Laos, where you like to travel from there is your choice. Nothing to do with Thai Immigration.
Tom *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
In that case would be stuck in Laos and either organise all the requirements in Laos to enter Thailand, or go to Vietnam.
Robert *******
If you can not show the proofs asked you wil get denied entry into Thailand and send back to the place you come from.

Go to a different Embassy
James ********
Be prepared if denied entry. Have you tried an Ed Visa for language or study at a university ?

After 15 months they might suspect that you are not a tourist ;-)

He is living in Bangkok, says enough.
Tom *******

I guess so. And if that happened I could re-enter Thailand at the border for 7 days? Not that it would look good in my passport.
Tom *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Ok 👍 Thanks for the advice
Robert *******
Yes, but be aware that with many entries into Thailand you have a bigger change to get the questions of proof of funds, proof of accommodation and proof of onward travel. Be prepared.
Tom *******

I haven't used visa exempt this year and I'm from the UK. So you think I'd get 30 days for free coming back in to Thailand?
Robert *******
They will likely not even let you apply for the visa, so nothing is stamped in your passport. If you come back into Thailand you can get, depending on country of origin of your passport a 15 day Visa on Arrival, you pay 2000 Thb at Immigration or the 30 Day Visa Exempt Entry, unless you used this Visa Exempt Entry already twice this year by land borders.
Robert *******
They put the warning stamp, so the most likely thing is you get refused to apply.
