TLDR : Answer Summary
The user expresses frustration over the difficulty of opening a bank account in Thailand in order to apply for a Non-O visa. Many commenters share their experiences and strategies, recommending hiring an agent, ensuring you have the proper documents, and visiting specific banks like Bangkok Bank or Kasikorn. They suggest having Thai friends assist in the process or obtaining proof of residency from immigration as key steps in successfully opening an account, with some humorously suggesting bribes or tricks, but emphasizing that persistence and proper guidance can yield results.

Say suggestion in Udon Thani?

Bank?

Good quality agent?

I saw an agent (at least she look to be) pick up 20-30 passports from the immigration officer I was sitting in front of last week.

I wanted to jump up and get her info, but… you know, a little busy at the time. lol 😂

I feel for you as Thailand is not always easy. Unfortunately you do not state why the banks have declined, is it your residence status, cash or whatever, surely you were advised why they could not open for you. If not satisfied ask to speak to the manager. Most banks have a list of requirements which they give to you.

Far to often people complain without following simple steps, they get angry which is a no no, and your post appears to show that.

Have your wife talk in Thai requesting exactly what they want from you.
Judy **********
Which province are you in? We have an awesome agent in Chiang Mai.
Steve **********
@Judy *********
Immigration Office in Chiangmai is very farang friendly, they have volunteers on staff to assist and answer questions.

Thank you, but I'm aware of that. I was offering assistance to the OP, not asking for advice. 😀

I believe that was helpful. These groups are so toxic. I'm out.

Thailegaladvise. Can get u one. You don't have to get insurance. Each bank and each branch make up their own requirements daily. So agent or shop around. Use a major bank and preferably not in the tourist hub areas as banks know they can strong arm you there.
Ian *********
It only took me 20 mins at Bangkok Bank but I already had a non o visa.
Alfred ***********
Yeah should be easy at Bangkok bank. As a few have said passport lease but any bank should open on especially if you get a residency certificate from immigration.
John *********
So, currently you have a visa exemption or a tourist visa? You need the Non-O first, then the bank account. Just so you know it can be done. My Thai wife and I have never/will never pay a bribe, have never/will never hire an agent, have never/will never pay for bank account insurance.

When we return in October, I will close my bank account at Government Savings Bank and move my B400k to Bangkok Bank or Kasikorn.

And that is one reason why people are looking elsewhere for example Indonesia veitnam phillipines

We did it on our own with Bangkok bank here at meechok plaza..takes time for them to understand but we finished it bank book and ATM cards..no agent involved.

I opened as krugsri account with just my passport

Who do I have to blow? Try the bank manager?

You might try a tourist heavy city. I had no problem in Phuket.

I bought the insurance as well

No need for an agent....I walked into Bangkok Bank Nonthaburi with a Thai friend, which obviously helped with the language difference, showed passport and TM30 , bought the obligatory, but not essential accident insurance, and walked out 45 minutes later with bank account and debit card. Same with driving test...organised myself....pretty difficult to fail it. Perseverance is the key !!

These days, you will have more luck solo, if you are renting a condo, and your name is on the lease. Otherwise, Agents are becoming more and more the only solution for many.

Disregard all the requests from Don, Eric and Don Jr.

However ; can certainly recommend Ivanka, although she was more nimble during my time in NY

Hire yourself a proper, eperienced agent - the $'s you spend on an agent is well worth it
Paul *******
Just gone through it all

If you don’t have a Thai to help you through the process get an agent you will struggle without one.
Deanna *******
Krungsri (yellow bank) was the easiest for us. BUT ... do not open a join account because they really don't understand that. Also, we were told that if we had a joint account, we could NOT get internet/phone app access.

Go to a high tourist area in a mall or similar. It will not happen in small towns in Thailand. Best of luck!
Patrick ********
If I were you, I’d go to savannakhet, procure a single entry non O visa and go to the bank with that. Then, you can apply for an extension of stay after depositing relevant funds. I would go out of my way to avoid paying anyone and playing their game, but I’m just a stubborn c*nt 😆
Tobben ********
Just let you woman open one and use it yourself..
Steve *******
@Tobben *******
well you can't do that if the account is for a visa as it must be in your name
JP *******
@Steve ******
dude, I’m old enough to remember when you could do a lot of things in 2006. Lmao 🤣
Steve *******
@JP ******
it was difficult then but certainly easier for everything than now.
Tobben ********
@Steve ******
Sorry,but I don"t have that problem.I opened an account in 2006 in my own name in Bkk bank in Pattaya on a 60 days touristvisa and used the name of my hotel as an adress.I also had an account in my name in Bkk bank in Phuket on a 60 days t.visa in 2000 and used the homeadress of a thai bargirl. That account i didnt use for 10 years so the bargirl got a letter home before it got cancelled.
Steve *******
@Tobben *******
but was the account un your name. Mine had to be in my name.

@Steve ******
Yeah,in my name and it still is . I use Bkk bank in Soi Buakaow.If i were you i would go to the bank and ask. They will help you !

@Tobben *******
no. I had an account since 2006. It's the OP who has difficulties.
David ***********
A Visa agent would be a good idea.
Glyn **********
Get a letter from Immigration it only costs 500 baht. I did it on a tourist visa at the Bangkok Bank. I've read that the banks are now reluctant to open accounts for US citizens, due to the US governments requirements.
Ru ****
@Glyn *********
I had the certificate from Immigration and was still denied because my name is not in the blue house book where I reside.
Dennis ***********
Do you have a resident address?
Malcolm *******
Try these , very good . They do driving licenses and open Bank accounts, no problem . 3 to 4000 baht
David *********
I wouldnt have anyone help me. Passport and visa you should be able to get an account after sitting in bank for 2-3 hours. Got help from a friend and she ended up stealing 6k out of my account. Bangkok Bank

No one to blow, stop being a Cheap Charlie. Pay an agent.

Why do people put themselves through so much pain? Some seem lucky, others struggle. If you're struggling use an agent. You'll need to pay but if you're prepared to blow well you could offer I suppose 😂😂😂
Stacey ****************
What type of visa are you on now?
Alistair *********
@Stacey ***************
Back in UK for now but was on marriage visa
Stacey ****************
@Alistair ********
I had no problem getting the letter from immigration that you then take to the bank. Kasikorn bank was where I went and they told me about the letter I needed from immigration. I brought immigration a letter from my condo confirming my residence there, copies of passport, non tourist visa stamp, filled out the form request, paid a couple hundred baht, waited an hour for them to process, and left with a letter that brought back to Kasikorn and they opened me an account straight away.

It was easy once I found out what was actually needed, which no one had told me before.

I do think it’s easier in the areas with higher foreign residents. My Thai wife and I had tried out in the rural areas and kept getting the same run around that it couldn’t be done.

I was able to get it done by myself in Cha Am, along Thai drivers licenses once I had the right documents for immigration to give me letters.
Alistair *********
I had similar problems when I last moved to Thailand in 2018. I was living in Hua Hin and nobody wanted to open an account for me. I tried a bit of a trick, went into Krungskri Bank in one of the Malls and told them that I was in the previous week and was told if I bring my passport with Visa and a copy of lease they would open account for me. It worked because they opened the account immediately.

Go to immigration, get a letter stating proof of residence, take it to the bank, BB in my case and job done! Couldn't be any simpler. I got one on a 60 day visa. No agent required. What reason are they giving you for refusing?

Print out some ad for a 30 million baht pool villa and set up a fake email pretending to be the seller and produce some purchase process correspondence between yourselves. Easily done via an agent in Pattaya.

Otherwise try the head office branch of Bangkok bank and find out exactly what hoops they want you to jump. They wanted an embassy certified copy of my passport. Which is why it's easier to use an agent....
Christopher ***********
Can you take with you a Thai person of 'standing'? Government workers, especially schoolteachers can be useful. My visa agent told me that Thai banks are nervous of money laundering but Bangkok Bank don't care so much.

May have but don't need to. If they force you verbally - just walk to another branch in another city or another bank. I opened it for my hubby in 2022- he needed a copy of a passport, visa, TM30 and my relative who is a government officer to verify his ID( person). Yes, they tried to sell the insurance but I declined to get it.

that’s just bull. Yes they want you to do but it’s just to get a sale. Yi7 think every Thai does that?

Just ask them for their exact requirements in writing. Do it and go back to the same branch
Nick **********
@Neil *******
It may be what you call "bull", however, 2 friends were denied accounts, then agreed to buy insurance, and then they were given accounts. A friend of mine was a bank manager in one of the bigger banks in Phuket, and told me(some years ago)that there is no banking law to prohibit a Thai bank from opening a foreigners account, even on a tourist visa. Like immigration and gov't offices here, it is usually up to the individual you are asking

@Neil *******
Try to open a bank account in Europe without residence permit...

Kim *********
@Neil *******
yes it does because the owner of the house must fill out a tm30 which is the basis for the proof of residence. I fill out the tm30 for my wife when I visit her and went to immi when I visited her lately and got a proof of residence with the purpose of opening a bank account
Neil ********
@Kim ********
lucky, normally at least a rental agreement required as you can get a TM30 by staying in a hotel.

Disagree entirely...these comments are fed to this site by Agents !

They state Agents needed for O. OA, student., Open bank accounts. Etc.

One even openly advertises they'll get you a Driver's Licence without a Test. ( as though not enough bike deaths ).

Agents are becoming an industry unto themselves.

You want Truth...ask an immigration officer (IO),

Or.Traffic Police !
Stuart *********
@Steve *********
You can disagree all you want. If you want to open a bank account on a tourist visa or exempt entry you can pound the streets and visit 30 or so branches until you find the one that will open an account for you. Or you could use an agent and have the account opened by the next day.

No one on here states you need an agent for an OA visa. You can only get that in your home country.

Some use agents for a Non O because they can’t meet the requirements. Some because they just don’t want the hassle.

The ones spouting about getting a driving license are spam and are banned as soon as we notice them or the comment reported.
Steve **********
@Stuart ********
No place here for such negative attitude.

2 of my 3 accounts were opened on tourist visa.

And despite my blocking D/L agents, they're thriving, and circumvent blocks.

But good luck to ya
Stuart *********
@Steve *********
You might have done that a couple of years ago. But times change. The banks have cracked down on opening accounts on short term entries. it’s not impossible to open an account but really difficult these days.

No negative attitude, just realistic from seeing hundreds of posts from others that have tried.
Sean **********
@Stuart ********
i agree 100%, really struggled to get an account open for my Non-O. Running out of time I used an agent.
Stuart *********
@Sean *********
It’s one of those things. You can DIY and eventually find a branch that will open an account for you or just pay an agent to do it for you. Whether you have the time and resources to do it DIY and save a few thousand baht is up to you. For many the agent route is just easier.
Steve **********
@Stuart ********
agree, most of the hundreds of posts are just disgruntled tourists.
