What are the benefits of applying for the Thai LTR visa directly with BOI representatives compared to using an agent or law firm, and which intermediary do you recommend?

Hello Everyone

I wish to apply for the Thai LTR visa in a few months and would like to engage a highly trustworthy Immigration Law firm in Bangkok. I have two questions - please share your experience/insights:

1) Does it help an applicant in any manner to meet and apply directly with the BOI representatives, versus going through an agent/law firm (other than saving $$)?

2) Which intermediary do you recommend to secure my visa - Harvey Law Group vs Siam Legal vs Baan Thai vs Fragomen - or any other name you think to suggest? A secondary criteria for making my choice is that they should be able to assist with obtaining Medical Insurance and guide in future relocation matters.

Thank you for all your inputs. 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
This inquiry seeks advice on applying for a Thai LTR visa, specifically comparing the benefits of direct application with BOI representatives versus using an immigration law firm. The poster is looking for recommendations on trustworthy law firms, highlighting the importance of medical insurance and relocation assistance as secondary criteria. Community responses suggest that while using an agent can be costly and not necessarily more beneficial, it may simplify the documentation process. Recommendations include checking the BOI's list of approved agents and consulting with specific firms.

Think carefully applying direct unless you are confident you can provide all required documents accurately, and you can sell your case. Once you establish an account with the BOI, you are effectively locked in and will have difficulty re-establishing another account if anything goes awry.

I recommend you contact Brian Ramsden of Lawyers for Expats (Thailand) who will afford you an initial cost-free discussion. And, by the way the BOI charge 50,000THB for each applicant and lawyers will charge up to this figure, just understand what outcome you can expect for what you "finally" pay.

Thanks for the intermediary recommendation Ian. I find skilled lawyers/agents quite helpful in that they have seen so many applicants that they know the pitfalls (to avoid).

welcome, and I agree. The cost of an agent in the grand scheme of things whether one rents or lease/buys property is relatively small.

Which type of LTR are you looking at? The BOI themselves are pretty helpful and responsive

I was only considering an agent because I don’t live in Thailand yet, and if there is any legwork involved might be easier to have a person on the ground there. If everything will be largely electronic (email), then I can do without.

you shouldn't need anything from Thailand for the application. It's all online

The BOI website has a list of approved LTR agents. If you insist on using an agent, then it's one of those you should use.

They are not cheap, over 100,000 baht. I'm not sure why you would want to use one but they're there. You are still going to have to gather and submit all the required documents which is 99% of the work.

Thank you. I plan to meet with BOI. If it seems smooth enough, I’ll skip engaging an agent. I’ll go through the list on the BOI website as well.
