TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are planning to stay in Thailand for about 70 days, it is advisable to obtain a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) before leaving the US. This visa grants you 60 days of stay, which can be extended by 30 days at an immigration office for a fee. Without this visa, you would be eligible for a 30-day visa exemption, which could require a more complex extension process. Some options include border runs or extending within the country, but the SETV offers a more straightforward solution.

If you plan on staying in Thailand for the entire 70 days, then yes, do yourself a favor and get a single entry tourist visa before you come that will allow you to stay for 60 days and then you can extend that at immigration within the country for another 30 days.
However, if you plan to travel around the region (i.e. trip to Cambodia) then, depending on when you want to do those trips, it may not be worth having a visa.

you could do a 30 day visa exempt entry, than an 30 day extension. If near a border you can do a border bounce to get another 30 days. Total time 90 days. Or get a SETV 60 days and do a 30 day extension, also 90 days.

if you plan on staying 70 days you MUST get a SETV visa. This gives you 60 days extendable for another 30 days for 1900 baht at immigration. Otherwise you can only get 30 days visa exempt extendable for 30 days etc etc. Easy to get look at your nearest Thai embassy.

Yes Glenn is right. It is by far the easiest thing to do. You will be able to stay for up to 90 days with exstention. I used

How difficult is it to get one? It would be nice to have but not necessary if it's difficult to get. You might end up wasting almost a full day extending your visa if you plan to stay in Thailand all 70 days.
