Hi. If someone has a multiple entry 1 year non B visa, how soon can he apply for an extension? Does he have to wait a month before it expires or is it possible for him to extend it earlier? I'm asking because this person didn't realize that he would have to exit the country every 90 days with this type of visa. Would an extension nullify that, though? I would think that the extension would have the same terms as the original visa. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A holder of a multiple entry 1 year Non-B visa can apply for an extension of stay between 30 to 45 days before the visa's expiration date. However, applying for a yearly extension may invalidate the multiple entry visa, making it necessary to obtain a new re-entry permit if the extension is granted. It is important to note that for this type of visa, the holder should exit Thailand every 90 days, a practice often referred to as 'border-bouncing'. This process allows individuals to maximize their stay, extending their time in Thailand beyond the original visa duration.

Indeed. I count myself among them. I think a weekend trip every 3 months would be more pleasant than going to Chaengwattana multiple times and spending the whole day there.
Many many people would prefer that visa over the song & dance they go thru with the pile of paperwork to get yearly extensions of stays based on employment ;)
Unless I'm wrong applying for a yearly extension of stay will void that year-long, multi-entry Non-B visa and once the extension is granted the person would need to buy another re-entry permit.
In all honesty, the holder of that year-long, multi-entry Non-B can wring almost 15 months of stay out of that visa by "border-bouncing" every 90 days <- stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country, then stamping back into thailand for another 90 days.
On entering Thailand they put a stamp Admitted to Stay with a date in the passport. You can apply for an Extension of Stay 30 or 45 days before that date.
