quick Q - my 90 day report is due 14/3 - I am leaving Thailand 13/3. Should I do the 90 day report (online) anyway? Just to keep the online system in check?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus among commenters suggests that there is no need to file the 90-day report if you will be leaving Thailand before the report is due. You only need to report if you are in the country on the due date, so you can simply count 89 days from your next entry into Thailand for your next report.

OK thanks everyone for the useful guidance, as usual :)

I would say DO NOT report, there is no "up-side", (as in it doesn't help you in the least to do it)
Just count 89 days from the date you come back into the country and do your next 90 day report on that date..

the way the 90 day reporting works is
IF you are in thailand on the date the report is due you report
IF you are leaving the country BEFORE it's due, you don't and your next 90 day report is due 89 days from the date you stamp back into the country.

Its up to you.
Since you will be leaving on day 90 ... Not required.

will they not check if you have the 90 day paper slip in the passport?

The IO at the airport does not check, they are only interested that you leave before your Admitted until or permitted up to date

or maybe confuse the IO at the airport when I go through departures :/?

Even seeing you leave on day 89, there will be no harm done.
